"Long Way Home" featuring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman is now streaming on Apple TV+.In 2004, besties Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman took off on a motorcycle trip through Eastern Europe, Asia and Alaska in “Long Way Round.” Their travels for the 10-episode miniseries lasted well over three months. But they didn’t stop there. In 2007, “Long Way Down” saw them set out from Scotland and travel all the way through Africa to Cape Town, South Africa. During the eight episodes, they racked up a lot of miles and memories on their motorcycles.
In 2020’s “Long Way Up,” the duo decided to tackle their next trip through South and Central America on electric motorcycles, which sometimes proved to be a challenge due to charging issues. Now, in 2025, the friends once again take off on an exciting adventure, this time on old bikes. “Long Way Home” takes them from McGregor’s home in Scotland to the Scandinavian countries, the Arctic Circle and back down through Western Europe in a visually stunning 10-episode series, ending in England.
Riding through over 15 countries in two months poses a lot of challenges, and they both have their little spills off their bikes.
Back in 2008 when he spoke to the media, McGregor admitted, “Charley is a much, much better rider than I am and also, you know, good at speed. I’m not that competitive about it. I find the off-road riding sometimes really challenging.”
In “Long Way Home,” some of the roads are challenging, others are slippery due to the frigid temperatures and rain and snow, and sometimes they ride over immense bridges and tunnels miles long. This journey is not for the faint of heart.
Due to the terrain with all the islands in Scandinavia, they often take ferries. But throughout the majority of the show, they are on their motorcycles maneuvering through the countrysides and meeting new people, discovering new food, learning about different cultures and festivities and basically having a darn good time.
The episode in the Arctic Circle, just a few hundred miles from the North Pole, has spectacular scenery as the two check out the topography and kayak to a glacier.
Traveling with the duo are collaborators on the show David Alexanian and Russ Malkin, and the riders have another motorcycle following to record the days and nights. Both McGregor and Boorman also keep their own video diaries of the trip.
Whether they are camping out in the wild, jumping into freezing lakes, riding with sore backsides, resting in nice hotels or out in nature, both men find fun in their friendship and their excursions. They even went parasailing, which has become a passion for McGregor, but this was Boorman’s first time and probably his last.
The two are ambassadors for UNICEF and helped out in two UNICEF facilities during their journey. In Poland, they spent time with Ukrainian refugee children to learn about their new lives while they are waiting to return to their own country.
During the journey, the two men take part in several activities throughout their adventure, bringing to the viewers new cultures, music, sports and events.
McGregor is known to many as Obi-Wan Kenobi from the “Star Wars” saga, and at one point he compares a sword to his lightsaber, which is a cute nod to his time as Kenobi. Last year, he starred in the TV miniseries “A Gentleman in Moscow,” and in 2021 he portrayed fashion designer Halston in the miniseries of that name.
Boorman is also an actor and producer, although he has not portrayed an iconic character like Obi-Wan Kenobi. He adds a lot of comedy and fun to the show and is always excited to get back on the bike and head off to their next destination.
Boorman and McGregor met while they were co-starring in the 1997 film “The Serpent’s Kiss,” and it was during that shoot they formed their long friendship and bonded over their love of motorcycles. There is a brief flashback showing one of their scenes in that film.
“Long Way Home” dropped the first episode May 9 and is continuing throughout June. All four seasons of “Long Way” are available to stream on Apple TV+.
