Artist exhibits parodied works in Ogden
Steve Stones, Ogden artist and adjunct art professor at Weber State University, doesn’t take himself too seriously.
“I think that art has a tendency to be very elitist and pretentious and I think it often excludes people and intimates people. … I know I started feeling that way when I was an art student,” Stones said.
Stones didn’t always have this perspective, but it was when he had to sit through hours of critiques as an art student that he realized how “stuffed shirt” and elitist artists can be in their opinions.
“My work is about humor and parody,” Stones said, mentioning a specific piece on display at the exhibit called “Hello Kitty the Hutt,” a play on the “Star Wars” character Jabba the Hutt.
Some of Stone’s favorite subjects are inspired by religious iconography, popular culture, comic books and movie posters, he said.
With a carefree attitude about art in mind, Stones is exhibiting a selection of his unique acrylic on canvas pieces — some of which are collages or mixed media — at Grounds for Coffee at 3005 Harrison Blvd. in Ogden through June.
Stones said he has been showing at Grounds for Coffee about once a year since 2004, as he is good friends with the owners, Dan and Suzy Dailey.
People don’t have to like his art, Stones said, but he at least hopes they will be able to see the humor and think it’s fun to look at.
“Art needs to do that more often,” he said.
