All Utah artists are called to enter black, white or gray works in all mediums for the next Eccles Art Center art competition.

Earlier this month, the Eccles Art Center announced a call for entries for its 18th Statewide Black & White Competition. Accepted works and awards will be presented at a public reception at the art center during Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll in February.

For the biennial competition, three monetary awards will be given for first, second and third place. Entries will be received at the EAC, 2580 Jefferson Ave. in Ogden, Wednesday through Friday, Jan. 19-21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

EAC offers events, arts competitions, monthly exhibits, classes, workshops and more year-round. Winners of the Modern Abstract and Petite Impressions competitions were announced in December and are currently on display at EAC, the former until Thursday.

In January, the center’s main gallery will feature the accepted works to the Third Annual Northern Utah High School Seniors Exhibit, a scholarship award competition open to all Northern Utah senior high school students in all media. A reception for the community and artists will be held during Ogden’s Art Stroll on Friday, Jan. 7, from 5-8 p.m. and the exhibit, along with Petite Impressions in the Carriage House Gallery, will continue through Jan. 29.

The Black & White Competition is open to all Utah-residing artists and photographers with original artwork in black, white and/or shades of gray that is within two years of completion and has not been previously exhibited in an EAC-sponsored juried exhibit. The works must also be framed, fully assembled and ready for display.

Original work in all media, including paintings, prints, monoprints, drawings, graphics, photographs, pottery, sculptures and textiles may be entered into the juried competition.

The nonrefundable fees, which are used for prize money and publicity, are $10 per entry and artists may submit up to two pieces. Accepted works will be determined by the juror chosen to curate the competition.

The Black & White Competition is funded by grants provided by Weber County RAMP, Ogden City Corp/Ogden City Arts, the Utah Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A reception for artists, friends and the community will be held on Friday, Feb. 4, from 5-8 p.m. The awards for the Black & White Competition will be posted at the reception and the exhibit will be on display from Feb. 4-26.

The EAC’s gallery is free and open to the public weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information or to enter, visit ogden4arts.org or call 801-392-6935.
