Brokaw: Sci-fi fantasy series ‘WondLa’ comes to Apple TV+
From the trilogy of books by Tony DiTerlizzi, “WondLa” is a sci-fi fantasy that is geared for teens. The books first captured the imaginations of readers in 2010 and now this colorful animated show streams on Apple TV+. The first season consists of seven episodes and follows Eva on her search for other humans.
The story begins with Eva being raised in an underground bunker by a robot named “Muthr,” which stands for Multi-Utility Task Help Robot. On her 16th birthday, the bunker is attacked, forcing Eva to flee to the surface of the planet. The problem is, when she gets to the surface of Earth, it isn’t the Earth about which she was taught. Everything is different and filled with a variety of aliens, none of which resemble humans. There are flying whales and various species, but no humans, which Eva desperately wants to find.
Earth, now called Orbona, is a strange environment and Eva, being the only human these aliens have ever seen, is being hunted by an evil creature named Besteel who collects species and wants this human as his prize possession.
Muthr finally joins her on the surface, and Eva is befriended by a giant water bear named Otto and an alien named Rovender who begrudgingly takes her under his protection. A fun aspect is that Eva is able to communicate with Otto telepathically. She is a brave young girl who is often a bit careless with danger yet is steadfast about finding other humans.
With only a small clue to go on, Eva and her group set out to search for the other humans she knows deep in her heart are on the planet. Finding them is her only goal. There must be others, and for this girl who has spent her entire life to this point with only a robot and a stuffed animal, she is lonely and in need of other humans for company. And she wants to know what happened to the Earth she learned about while in the bunker.
The show combines the fantasy and science fiction of “Star Wars” with some of the advancements of “The Jetsons” and some aspects of “The Wizard of Oz” as well as “Planet of the Apes,” making this is an interesting tale. It’s creative and much of the scenery is colorful and fascinating.
Having a rating of TV-PG, there are many elements of danger and peril. While kids as young as 10 have embraced the books, it might be a bit too daunting to see some of the scenes play out on screen for very young viewers. Parents need to keep that in mind.
Eva is a brave and spirited hero who viewers will enjoy watching. There are many emotional scenes that will touch the hearts of viewers. This is an interesting story of fantasy and science fiction that will continue when the second season comes to Apple TV+, although no date has been released yet for Season Two. In the meantime, Season One began streaming June 28.
