Tech Matters: The tech behind the big game

Leslie MeredithFootball’s biggest game is nearly here. Along with the matchup itself, the commercials are a huge draw and the halftime show always makes headlines. But there’s another part of the Super Bowl that gets far less attention: the technology behind the game. It isn’t built to be seen, but its output has steadily changed how football is played, coached, analyzed and broadcast.
At the center of the modern broadcast is speed. A Super Bowl production moves enormous amounts of video and data under extreme time pressure. Every replay, stat and graphic has to appear quickly enough to matter, without disrupting the flow of the game. That demand for immediacy has driven major changes in how football is tracked and how broadcast systems are built.
Every NFL stadium is now wired with tracking systems that monitor what happens on the field in remarkable detail. Players wear small RFID chips embedded in their pads. Optical camera systems track movement from multiple angles. Together, they generate a continuous flow of location and timing data, recording where every player is, how fast they are moving and how long actions take.
Most of what turns that raw data into usable information relies on algorithms. These rule-based systems calculate speed, distance and acceleration, translate coordinates into a precise digital map of the field and synchronize every data point with video by timestamp. When a stat appears seconds after a play, it’s because the system has already processed the numbers.
Machine learning, a subfield of artificial intelligence, are used to recognize patterns in gameplay. Tracking data is messy. Players cluster and overlap, and signals interfere with one another. Machine learning models trained on years of past games help clean that data, smoothing noise and identifying meaningful moments such as bursts of acceleration or separation between a receiver and defender.
Machine learning is also used in probability models. When broadcasters reference win probability or expected points, those numbers come from models trained on thousands of historical games and play situations. The models estimate how often similar decisions led to certain outcomes. These systems are trained in advance and applied during the game, which keeps results stable rather than reactive.
NBC, which is producing this year’s Super Bowl, is introducing a new on-air graphics package designed to take advantage of this faster data flow. Updated score bars and insert graphics are built to add context without overwhelming the screen. Instead of stopping the broadcast to explain a trend, producers can layer in information that aligns directly with what viewers are watching.
Environmental data is now part of that mix. Weather Applied Metrics systems quantify real-time conditions such as wind speed, temperature and humidity and translate them into broadcast-ready insights. Rather than general commentary about difficult conditions, broadcasters can show how wind affects kicking range or ball flight based on measured data tied to historical outcomes.
Much of this data infrastructure runs through the NFL’s Next Gen Stats system, powered by tracking technology from Zebra Technologies. These feeds support visual breakdowns of routes, coverage and decision-making that now appear regularly during replays.
Production infrastructure has evolved to support this complexity. Levi’s Stadium has undergone major upgrades, including a full IP-based control room and 4K glass-to-glass production workflow. IP-based systems replace older, hardware-heavy setups with flexible software-driven networks, allowing video, audio and data to move more efficiently between cameras, replay systems and broadcast operations.
Camera systems have advanced as well. High-resolution multiangle camera arrays and wireless RF cameras allow producers to capture dynamic shots without restricting movement on the field. Augmented reality graphics, calibrated using multiple camera feeds, align virtual elements accurately with live action. League-wide optical tracking and replay systems from Hawk-Eye Innovations support everything from virtual measurement graphics to more precise replay review.
Automation helps manage scale. A Super Bowl broadcast can involve hundreds of cameras and dozens of simultaneous data feeds. Software systems tag plays as they occur, align video with tracking data and surface relevant clips quickly. Artificial intelligence is used selectively, particularly after the game. Networks such as ESPN and Fox Sports use AI-generated highlight systems to speed postgame production, allowing analysts to focus on explanation rather than searching through footage.
Technology has also expanded access to the game. OneCourt, a tactile tablet designed for blind and low-vision fans, translates live tracking data into vibrations and audio cues so users can physically feel the flow of play, using the same real-time data that powers broadcast graphics.
While you’re enjoying the game, the ads or the halftime show, it’s worth remembering how much technology is running in the background. Algorithms handle the math. Machine learning helps sort signal from noise. Together, those systems have turned the Super Bowl into one of the most technically demanding live broadcasts on television, even if most viewers never stop to think about how it all works.
