The Toyota Camry is like the comfort food of the automotive world, always comforting and reliable. For decades it has been the dependable midsize sedan that families, commuters and road warriors alike have counted on for comfort, reliability and value.

Yet over the last few years, Toyota has transformed the Camry from simply practical transportation into something with a lot more personality. After spending two full weeks behind the wheel of the all-new 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade Edition in striking Supersonic Red, we came away impressed by just how far this iconic sedan has evolved.

Thanks to an unexpected late winter snowstorm in the Denver area, transportation schedules shifted around and we were fortunate enough to keep the Camry an extra week. That bonus time allowed us to really settle into daily life with Toyota’s newest hybrid sedan, and by the end of our extended test, we understood exactly why the Camry continues to dominate the midsize sedan market.

Nightshade styling turns heads

The Nightshade Edition immediately stood out in our driveway. Finished in Toyota’s eye-catching Supersonic Red paint, the sedan looked sporty, aggressive and upscale all at once. Toyota has done an excellent job giving the Camry a sharper, more modern appearance without losing the mature styling that longtime buyers appreciate.

Toyota's fully integrated hybrid system quietly maximized efficiency in the background, allowing us to easily blow past EPA estimates to finish our test at an impressive 47.5 miles per gallon. The Nightshade package added blacked-out trim throughout the exterior, including gloss-black badging, mirrors, grille accents and sporty wheels that contrasted perfectly against the deep red paint. It gave the Camry an athletic presence that turned heads everywhere we went, from grocery store parking lots in Utah County to freeway rest stops on the drive north to Ogden.

For years, midsize sedans have often blended into the background, but this Camry was different. People noticed it. More than once during our two weeks with the vehicle, someone asked about the color or commented on how sharp the sedan looked.

Comfortable and upscale interior

Inside, Toyota continued to impress with a cabin that felt far more premium than many shoppers may expect at its price point. The interior in the Nightshade Edition featured a clean, modern design with comfortable seating and soft-touch materials throughout the cabin. Black accents and contrast stitching helped maintain the sporty theme established by the exterior.

One thing we appreciated immediately was how spacious the Camry felt. Even with a full load of passengers, there was plenty of room both front and rear. The rear seat remains one of the strongest points of the Camry, offering enough legroom for adults to ride comfortably on longer drives.

Smooth around town and relaxed on the highway

During our two weeks of normal driving around town, the Camry handled everything we threw at it with ease. Daily commutes to work, errands around Springville and trips across Utah Valley all showcased the sedan’s smooth and quiet ride. Toyota has refined the suspension beautifully, delivering comfort without making the car feel disconnected from the road.

The hybrid powertrain was perhaps the biggest surprise of the entire experience. Toyota has now fully embraced hybrid technology in the Camry lineup, and after driving this newest version, it is easy to see why.

Under the hood, the hybrid system worked seamlessly, providing smooth acceleration and excellent responsiveness whether merging onto Interstate 15 or navigating stop-and-go traffic through Provo and Orem.

Power delivery was immediate and confidence inspiring. The electric motor helped the sedan leap away from stoplights quickly, while the gasoline engine blended in almost invisibly as speeds increased. At freeway speeds, the Camry cruised effortlessly and quietly, making long-distance travel exceptionally relaxing.

Ogden trip highlights highway comfort

Craig had the opportunity to take the Camry on a trip north to Ogden during our week with the vehicle for a series of meetings, giving him an excellent chance to see how the sedan handled extended highway driving. Even with changing weather conditions and stretches of heavy traffic along the Wasatch Front, the Camry remained comfortable and composed.

On the freeway drive to Ogden, adaptive cruise control especially proved valuable during heavier traffic stretches, helping reduce driver fatigue and making the overall trip more relaxing.

Outstanding hybrid efficiency

The drive to Ogden highlighted another one of the Camry’s greatest strengths: fuel economy.

Toyota estimates the hybrid-powered Camry at an impressive 46 miles per gallon, a number that already sounds remarkable for a roomy midsize sedan. However, after two full weeks of driving — including freeway travel, city errands, commuting and daily use — we actually exceeded the EPA estimate, finishing our extended test at an outstanding 47.5 miles per gallon.

That kind of efficiency is nothing short of incredible when you consider the comfort, size and performance the Camry offers. With fuel prices continuing to fluctuate, the ability to drive a stylish, comfortable sedan for nearly 50 miles on a gallon of gas makes a strong case for the hybrid Camry.

What impressed us most was that we never had to alter our driving habits to achieve those numbers. We simply drove normally. There was no hypermiling or overly cautious acceleration involved. The hybrid system quietly worked in the background, constantly maximizing efficiency without sacrificing drivability.

Technology and safety stay front and center

Toyota’s technology package in the Camry also deserves praise. The infotainment system was intuitive and responsive, with a large touchscreen that was easy to use while driving. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connected quickly every time, making navigation and music streaming simple and convenient.

Cruising effortlessly along Interstate 15, the Camry proved that high efficiency doesn't mean sacrificing highway comfort. On Craig’s solo commute north to Ogden for meetings, Toyota Safety Sense features like adaptive cruise control made navigating heavy traffic a completely relaxed experience. (Photo supplied)

The available digital gauge cluster added a modern touch, and the wireless charging pad helped keep devices powered throughout the day. Multiple USB ports throughout the cabin also ensured everyone stayed connected during longer trips.

Toyota Safety Sense continues to be one of the best standard safety packages in the industry, and the Camry came loaded with driver assistance features including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. These systems operated smoothly and unobtrusively during our time with the car.

At the end of the week

Even after two weeks, the Camry never felt boring or routine. That may be the biggest compliment we can give it.

For many buyers, midsize sedans are purchased out of practicality. But the 2026 Camry Nightshade adds genuine style and personality to the equation while still delivering the reliability and efficiency Toyota buyers expect.

The Supersonic Red paint combined with the Nightshade trim gave the sedan an upscale sporty appearance that easily rivaled some luxury-brand sedans costing far more. Meanwhile, the hybrid system delivered fuel economy numbers that once seemed impossible in a vehicle this roomy and comfortable.

Perhaps most importantly, the Camry simply fit into daily life so effortlessly. Whether running errands around town, making the drive north to Ogden or dealing with an unexpected extra week due to the Denver snowstorm, the Toyota never missed a beat.

For anyone looking for a midsize sedan that delivers both practicality and personality, the new Camry deserves a serious look. It may just surprise you the way it surprised us.
