Since moving to Ogden two summers ago, the Ogden Farmers Market has become one of my favorite weekly outings. If I’m in town on a Saturday morning, I will be on 25th St., whether I’m by myself or with friends. If anyone comes to visit me during these summer months, they will be required to attend as well.

While I’m no expert, the art of the farmers market is simple.

I advise arriving early. Upon arrival, the first thing that must be done is purchasing a beverage to sip on while one wanders from vendor to vendor. While there are food trucks serving coffee and other drinks, recently I’ve been enjoying going into a shop downtown to purchase my matcha (I’m weird, I know).

Once the morning beverage is secured one must assess the line for Yoder’s donuts. The line gets long quickly beginning at 8 a.m. However, if it’s under a 30-minute wait, I think it’s always worth the wait. Their glazed sourdough donut is one of the best donuts I’ve ever tasted.

The best way to peruse the market is to pick a side of the street and stick to it all the way down before looping around the other way. That way you see everything and don’t affect the flow of traffic by wandering back and forth.

Depending on what you enjoy personally, your favorite vendors and stands will vary from mine. I’ll share my recommendations with you nonetheless.

Hummus from The Hummus Stop has been a staple for me the past two summers. I have convinced most people I know out here to go buy hummus from them. Upon walking up to the stand the guys working the stand are practically shoving hummus into your mouth. It’s magical. They’ll give you every flavor to try and just when you think you’ve tried them all … there’s more. My personal favorite, which most of my friends agree with me on, is the artichoke hummus. I would never in a million years reach for artichoke hummus in a store but theirs is phenomenal. I keep it stocked in my fridge, I highly recommend.

As you wander down the street you’ll see so many delicious sweet treat options. However, my favorite this summer that tops all of the others is the Butter My Bread Bakery. I go every weekend to buy whatever their sweet roll flavor they’ve made that week. From the many samples they let me try each week I can confidently say that everything they make is heavenly. While I probably could eat one of the massive sweet rolls by myself in one sitting, I like to keep it in the fridge and have a few bites each night heated up in the microwave. And it tastes just as yummy every night. My favorite sweet roll so far has been the blackberry cobbler sweet roll (yes, it’s as good as it sounds), with their Bischoff cookie sweet roll at a close second place. Truly delicious.

I also love local honey and will choose that over generic honey from the grocery store any day. The market offers so many options for honey and they’re all great. White Lake Farms has been my go-to since last summer and I think it will be for a while. Even when I have a full jar of honey at home I still like to go and taste their honey.

Speaking of tasting, every weekend I taste essentially every kind of bread that Volkers Bakery has out for samples. My personal favorite being the olive and asiago loaf that they make. But no loaf will lead you astray.

Hopefully you feel encouraged to go to the farmers market and try some of my favorites and enjoy the community that can be found there each weekend. Be sure to bring a bag and wear sunscreen!

Other farmers market enthusiasts share their favorites

“(The best part of farmers markets is) meeting and getting to know the various vendors, having great conversations with others who are present, seeing how creative people are not just crafts but food creations. They are so missed at the end of the season. And I like coming to know some vendors do well that when they’re not present or missing a week of two; feeling concern for them. It’s another extension of family.”

Missy Sullivan Poppenger, Lehi

“I absolutely love farmers markets! The unique and delicious foods, treats and drinks you can’t find anywhere else, all while supporting local entrepreneurs. I’m especially a sucker for agua fresca.”

Skyler Beltran, Utah County Commissioner

“I met my best friend and got a part time job! I get to see lots of neighbors i might not meet otherwise.”

Anne Foley, Orem

“I like having fresh, local produce, at reasonable prices.”
