Willard Bay as viewed from atop Willard Peak.WILLARD — A 51-year-old man who went missing following a swimming incident at Willard Bay State Park over the weekend was identified Monday morning amid continuing search efforts.
Robert Mittendorf of Weber County — identified in a press release from the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of State Parks — was reportedly swimming with his son near their boat on Willard Bay on Saturday evening when a sudden change in weather resulted in the two being separated from the watercraft.
Mittendorf’s son was able to swim back in an attempt to get a life jacket for his father in spite of the stormy conditions, according to the release, but Mittendorf “went under the water and did not resurface.”
The DNR release stated that Utah State Parks law enforcement rangers, the Willard City Police Department, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Division of Outdoor Recreation rangers, Utah Department of Public Safety and Box Elder and Weber County Search and Rescue teams are “actively assisting in the search operation,” which spans an area over a mile in width. However, murky water conditions have complicated the search and Mittendorf remained unaccounted for as of Monday afternoon.
“During this challenging time, the Utah Division of State Parks extends our thoughts to Mittendorf’s family and friends,” the release read. “We would like to thank the other agencies who have responded and continue assisting in this search effort.”
It was further noted in the release that the search is ongoing and that updates would be provided as they become available.
DNR also provided the following public safety message:
“With summer in full swing and Labor Day on the horizon, we remind all visitors to Utah’s state parks to exercise caution and prioritize safety when engaging in water activities. Always recreate with a buddy, wear your life jacket, and stay aware of weather conditions. It’s essential to be prepared with the appropriate safety gear and ensure someone knows your location and expected return time.”
