Historic B-29 aircraft set to visit Ogden in September, public has opportunity to ride
OGDEN — A big visitor is set to make its way to Ogden next month.
In a press release received by the Standard-Examiner, it was announced that “Doc” — one of only two Boeing B-29 Superfortresses in airworthy condition — will be stopping at Ogden-Hinkley Airport Sept. 23-26 as part of its History Restored Tour. Members of the public will have an opportunity to ride the historic aircraft.
“The mid-week tour stop will feature B-29 Doc Flight Experience rides in Ogden in the evenings on Tuesday, Sept. 24, and Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. both days, as well as morning flights on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 9 and 11 a.m.,” according to the release from Doc’s Friends, Inc.
Several spots in the aircraft are available for purchase from the bombardier’s seat to the gunners’ seats.
Sean Elliott, B-29 Doc aircraft commander, said in the release that the B-29 is significant to the region.
“Ogden and its surrounding area have a rich heritage in military and aviation history, dating back to as early as World War I and continuing with its present-day mission at Hill Air Force Base where our nation’s warfighters continue to serve today,” he said. “The proximity of nearby Wendover Field where members of the 509th Composite Group trained for atomic warfare and nuclear weapons during World War II is truly exceptional.”
He added that having Doc travel through Ogden is a way of reconnecting the area with its past.
“Bringing B-29 Doc to an area like Ogden gives people a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with history and learn about the machines that were built to protect freedom and deliver victory for the Allies during the war,” he said. “It also allows us to connect to and inspire future generations to serve, whether in our nation’s military or in an aviation or aerospace related career.”
