OGDEN — On the heels of Ombu Grill’s successful Layton launch in September 2024, the emerging chain has continued its northward march with the opening of Ombu Sushi & Cajun Seafood Buffet — located next to Ocean Mart at 1084 S. Washington Blvd. — in Ogden last Saturday.
While the Layton location offers Korean barbecue with meats grilled at the table, with other locations around the state serving up grilled or authentic hot pot experiences, the Ogden restaurant is taking a different tack with quality, ready-to-eat sushi, Cajun and seafood options. According to Managing Partner Kimi Lin, Ombu’s buffet concept originated in Louisiana with locations in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
So far, foodies in the Weber-Davis area seem to be enjoying the mixed concept.
“We do have some real Asian food, not American-style Chinese,” Lin told the Standard-Examiner. “The steamed fish is really good, we’ve got Peking duck and we created some good sushi rolls and spare ribs. We also have a recipe for Cajun seafood from Louisiana. … So, we have a local recipe to bring here to Utah.”
Ombu’s lunch buffet is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, during which adults eat for $13.99 and kids eat for $6.99. Dinner is served from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. for $29.99 and $14.99, respectively. All-day dinner is served on Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Kids under 3 feet tall always dine for free.
The restaurant also offers carry-out buffet options, charged by the pound, and a senior discount.
Lin understands that dinner prices are at a premium level, however, he notes that Ombu sources premium ingredients for its myriad offerings and offers a clean, comfortable dining environment and a friendly wait staff.
“After people try our dinner, they’re always satisfied,” Lin said. “We serve Cajun seafood, snow crab, sashimi … That’s our target for the customer. We try to serve better quality, taste and environment for your dining.”
Building out the restaurant was challenging for Ombu’s proprietors. Their corner of the former 12th Street Shopko building had never before housed a restaurant. Now, though, the 10,000-square-foot space — which was designed and decorated by professionals from China — offers patrons a unique dining atmosphere in a distinctly modern setting.
For Lin, who emigrated from the Fujian province in China, the opportunity to bring Ombu’s buffet concept to Northern Utah has been personally gratifying.
“I’ve been in the United States for over 15 years,” he said. “Since I moved here, I started doing the restaurant business. … Everybody has an ‘American dream’ to make your life to be better. After immigration, I built my home here.”
