Ogden Mayor Ben Nadolski speaks to the editorial board at the Standard-Examiner in Ogden on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025.

OGDEN — In the wake of a shooting that took the life of a 16-year-old male on Tuesday, Ogden Mayor Ben Nadolski is asking the community to rally around those affected.

“It’s a really tragic event, tragic loss of youthful life and youthful promise,” Nadolski told the Standard-Examiner on Wednesday. “Losses like this are never acceptable.”

The shooting occurred in the area of 5th Street and Gramercy Avenue on Tuesday around 2:45 p.m.. According to a police statement on Tuesday, the victim ended up at Ben Lomond High School just after school had been let out for the day where school staff and the school resource officer attempted to treat him.

“I’m really thankful for the school district and our first responders,” Nadolski said. “That student returned back to the school in his time of need, and there’s a reason for that. That’s clearly where they felt safe and they felt they had support and people they knew they could count on and rely on in that moment. That’s what the school is and that’s what our officers are and were in that moment. I’m thankful that we have the right people in the right places when our students need them and I’m thankful that the district shares our priorities and is a partner in providing the kind of safety we need to provide at our schools.”

Nadolski said the shooting and last Thursday’s bomb threat against Ben Lomond High School aren’t an indication that schools in Ogden are unsafe.

“I don’t want recent events to make people feel like our schools are not safe places,” he said. “We have a lot of incredible kids and incredible teachers and administrators and first responders that provide a great place for learning. Those are things we should celebrate, but right now is a time to mourn and respect the loss and to support the family, friends and loved ones of this young kid.”

He noted that there are resources available for all who need it.

“There are kids and families in our city right now going through a really hard thing,” he said. “I want those families to know that the school district has a lot of resources available and, if you need help, to reach out. If you know someone that needs help, reach out for them.”

Lt. Will Farr of the Ogden City Police Department told the Standard-Examiner on Wednesday that no updates are available on the shooting at this time.

Nadolski said that there remains one focus for the city.

“Our priority and our focus remains and will always be the safety of our schools, our kids, our families, our community,” he said. “You can’t control everything that happens out there, as much as we wish we could. You can’t get ahead of everything, but we’re going to keep doing everything to make sure it doesn’t happen. When it does, we just need to remember that we’re a community, that we’re a community that cares and now’s the time to care deeply for each other and support each other to get that family and those kids through this.”
