On Thursday, as part of the 9/11 Day of Service, Weber County 4-H members filled small appreciation care kits that they delivered to members of the Weber County Correctional Officers Special Action Team later in the evening. The kits included bottles of water, snacks and a note thanking the officers for their service.

Weber County 4-H Program Coordinator Sharon Bee told the Standard-Examiner that this was the first time that Weber County 4-H has participated in the 9/11 Day of Service.

“We were awarded a grant through AmeriCorps and through that funding they just asked that we provide some sort of service,” she said. “After surveying the public a bit, we just decided to do the correctional facility.”

She said it was a great opportunity for the 30 members who participated in either assembling the kits or delivering them to correctional officers later Thursday.

“We love giving back to the community,” she said. “The community gives a lot to 4-H and helps the youth grow. Any opportunity that we have to return that service and participate in our community, we’re happy to do it.”

Bee said that even a small community service activity such as assembling care kits for the county’s correctional officers takes on a bigger meaning during a time like this.

“9/11 definitely changed the course of American history and I think it’s important to keep that knowledge alive and pass it on to the youth of the future,” she said. “By finding ways to take a day that wasn’t so great and turning it into something positive helps our youth to see how they can help the community when it’s in need.”

Prior to the 4-H members assembling their care kits, Bee spoke with the members about 9/11 and how the world has changed in many ways over the 25 years since.

Bee said Thursday was a huge opportunity for all those who participated.

“This is a great opportunity for the youth to see different (career) options, giving them a day of service and also providing education for the different careers and opportunities there are in the service field,” she said.

She said the kits were very well received as they were dropped off with Weber County corrections officers.

“The officers were very excited,” she said. “The kids were excited to pass them along, so it was a really good experience for them both.”

Bee added that it was a great experience for the 4-H members to help out and learn about a side of law enforcement that isn’t typically in the public eye.

“I loved that we were able to give back and give service to those who maybe aren’t always in the public eye,” she said. “It was a great experience for the kids to go and see what the corrections facility is like and learn what that side of law enforcement does and be exposed to something they aren’t normally exposed to.”
