ROY — Beginning this weekend, residents of Weber and north Davis counties will have a brand new local spot to play pickleball indoors.

Outta-The-Jar Pickleball, located at 1821 W. 4000 South, Suite 300, in Roy will be having its grand opening Saturday. And to celebrate the occasion, the business will be opening its doors for free pickleball.

“People can just walk through and take a look,” owner Brian Horne told the Standard-Examiner. “Any time between (9 a.m. and 6 p.m.), the doors are unlocked and it’s really open play.”

Throughout the day, there will be courts designated for novice, intermediate and advanced players. There also will be a special court set aside for first-timers interested in learning the sport’s basic rules and techniques from staff members.

Paddles and balls will be available to rent for people without their own equipment.

Horne noted that during Saturday’s event, one of the courts will be designated for winner-stays-on or “Pharaoh of the Court” games, in keeping with an ancient Egyptian theme present throughout the building. He also revealed that there will be an additional free day the following Saturday, April 27 — again, from 9-6.

Outta-The-Jar endeavors to be more accessible and affordable for players by eschewing traditional membership fees in favor of hourly single-court rates (full and partial building rentals also are available), providing nine courts of varying sizes and operating 24/7.

“You can go play from 12 until 2 in the morning. We don’t care,” Horne said. “You just book your court online, log in, go in and play. All the lights are automatic. When you’re done, everything locks behind you automatically.”

There also are features designed to enhance the general experience for players — i.e., 24-foot ceilings, 14-foot side nets to prevent stray balls from crossing into other courts, and carpeted areas and a dividing wall for noise reduction.

However, pickleball isn’t the only thing to do on site. On the second level, there’s a game room, kitchen area, party rooms and overlook rooms as well.

“This is also a great place for a day activity for a dance or a date,” Horne said. “You could rent one of those courts. Then, you walk upstairs and play pool and ping pong, and you can order in Grubhub or go out and get something. I mean, you can make sort of a night of it.”
