Weber School District elementary boundaries changed to accommodate new schools
Boundaries for some Weber School District elementary schools have been officially changed.
The boundaries were altered to alleviate overcrowding at some schools and accommodate two new elementary schools under construction. One is located in Pleasant View and the other is in the Remuda neighborhood of Farr West. Both will open for the 2019 school year.
Students in the north sections of the boundaries for Plain City and Farr West elementary schools will now attend the new school in Remuda. A small section of land south of West Harrisville Road and west of N. 1200 West used to be part of the boundaries for Pioneer Elementary School but will now go to Farr West.
Boundaries for the new school in Pleasant View have been drawn to the east of the Remuda school boundaries. That boundary’s western edge is along Interstate 15 and cuts into old boundaries for Lomond View and Majestic elementary schools to the south and east.
Even further east, the boundaries for Green Acres and North Ogden elementary schools remain unchanged.
The boundaries were changed after two open houses were held in October to gather community feedback. At a Nov. 7 school board meeting, Executive Director of Elementary Education Cami Alexander said the district made a few small changes to their initial plan after hearing the community’s questions and concerns.
These tweaks included slightly altering the boundaries for Pioneer Elementary School to keep a subdivision together, and sending students living in The Station at Pleasant View to Pleasant View Elementary School rather than Farr West Elementary School.
Alexander said in general, they tried to draw boundaries along city lines when they could.
These changes mean there will be 560 students at the new Pleasant View school and 482 students at the new Farr West school according to data presented to the school board. Majestic Elementary School will go from having 962 students to having 644 and Farr West Elementary School will go from having 1106 students to 709 students.
West Weber, Plain City, Pioneer and Lomond View elementary schools will also see a reduction in the number of students who attend.
Alexander said Majestic has dual immersion students who will get a boundary exception to attend there despite now being outside the school’s boundary, so the number of students attending there will likely be higher. The two new elementary schools under construction will be under capacity because there are homes being built in the area and the Farr West elementary school also has a wing for special education students.
“We wanted to make sure we have room for growth,” she said at the meeting, where the school board approved a first reading of the boundary change proposal.
At the subsequent Dec. 5 school board meeting, Alexander said no new information had come to light. The board then unanimously approved the boundary changes, making them official for the 2019-20 school year.
“This is a tough thing to go through,” board President Jon Ritchie said. “It’s an exciting time to get a new school in a time when we’re so pressed for room out in that area.”
Students currently in fifth grade who would be in their final year of elementary school when the boundaries take effect will have the ability to opt-out and stay at their school. Families can also apply for a boundary exception for other reasons.
“We will also work very hard to keep families intact if that’s what they want to do,” Alexander said at the Nov. 7 meeting.
