OGDEN — Proposed new boundaries for Ogden’s elementary schools, which shift the borders for five schools, generated no notable negative response and school officials have approved the changes.
Ogden School District Superintendent Luke Rasmussen said at Thursday’s Ogden School Board meeting that he had received no negative feedback in the lead-up to the gathering, just positive comments. Likewise, Wendy Van Dyke, an Odyssey Elementary teacher and president of the Ogden Education Association, said she had received no negative feedback.
“It seems to be something that our local membership is happy with how it’s going,” Van Dyke said. Van Dyke was the only speaker at a public hearing on the matter before the board unanimously approved the shifts, which take effect for the 2022-2023 school year.
The changes — in the works for months and focus of a series of public meetings — will shift the boundaries for New Bridge, Polk, Wasatch, Shadow Valley and Liberty elementary schools. The change stems from shifts in the number of elementary-aged kids around Ogden, capacities of the varied schools and enrollment trends.
Also figuring in things is the looming closure of Taylor Canyon Elementary at the end of the current school year and planned opening of Liberty Elementary for the coming school year. Liberty is the new school taking shape to replace T.O. Smith Elementary in southern Ogden, which was torn down.
