U.S. Rep. Blake Moore, left, seeking reelection, and Tina Cannon, challenging Moore, have both secured enough signatures on petitions to earn a spot on the June 28, 2022, Republilcan primary ballot.

SALT LAKE CITY — At least two hopefuls for the 1st District U.S. House seat will be facing off in the Republican primary in June.

Tina Cannon has garnered enough signatures on petitions to secure a place on the June 28 primary ballot, according to figures posted to the Utah Lieutenant Governor’s Office website on Wednesday. Blake Moore, the freshman incumbent, had already mustered the 7,000 signatures needed to get on the ballot.

Meantime, Republican primaries are also potentially shaping up for the 2nd District U.S. House seat, held by Rep. Chris Stewart, and the 4th District U.S. House seat, held by Rep. Burgess Owens. GOP challengers in each of those contests, Erin Rider in the 2nd District and Jake Hunsaker in the 4th District, have also mustered the required 7,000 signatures on ballots.

Cannon’s campaign didn’t immediately respond to a query seeking comment in the 1st District race. Rob Bishop, who held the seat through 2020 but didn’t seek reelection that year, is endorsing the challenger, he said in a letter to the editor submitted to the Standard-Examiner. He cited her local government experience and called her “a reliable conservative.”

Moore campaign spokesman Matt Lusty said regardless of having secured a primary ballot spot, the incumbent continues to reach out to Republican Party delegates.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to engage with delegates through April 23,” Lusty said. The Utah Republican Party convention is set for April 23, when party delegates will meet to select their preferred candidates in the U.S. House races and many other contests, also a way to get on the primary ballot.

Three other GOPers are also running for the 1st District seat, Andrew Badger, Julie Fullmer and William Campbell, but they are seeking a primary spot solely through the convention. Rick Jones is running as a Democrat for the seat, which covers Northern Utah, including Weber County and part of Davis County.

In the 2nd District race, the Rider campaign said Tuesday on Facebook that having secured a primary ballot spot via petition means Stewart will face a primary challenger for the first time as a congressman. Stewart is only seeking a ballot spot via the party convention and, as the incumbent, he likely has an edge there.

Securing the required number of signatures on petitions “means Erin will be the first primary challenger Chris Stewart has EVER faced in his 10 years in office!” reads the Rider campaign Facebook message. “It is clear that District 2 is ready for change!”

Two Democrats and members of the United Utah and Constitution parties are also running for the 2nd District seat, which covers part of Davis County as well and western and southwestern Utah.

Owens, the 4th District incumbent, declared his intent to collect signatures and petition for a ballot spot, but had none as of Wednesday. Still, as the incumbent, he likely has the inside track over Hunsaker to securing a ballot spot at the April 23 party convention.

A Democrat and United Utah Party member are also seeking the 4th District spot, focused in the center of Utah and covering much of Utah County.

In the race for the 3rd District seat, Rep. John Curtis, the GOP incumbent, faces four Republican challengers. Two Democrats and members of the Libertarian, Constitution and Independent American parties are also running.

Three of the Republicans had declared they intended to petition for a spot on the ballot but none of them had any signatures as of Wednesday. That bodes for a showdown at the party convention to determine who gets on the GOP primary ballot.

The 3rd District covers part of Utah County and much of eastern Utah.
