SYRACUSE — A Syracuse man and recent retiree who worked many years as an executive for Autoliv is vying for the 1st District U.S. House post.

Bill Campbell, a Republican, had already filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission but formally announced his candidacy on Tuesday for the Northern Utah seat. U.S. Rep. Blake Moore, a Salt Lake City GOPer, now holds the post and will be seeking his second term.

“I am not a career politician. I am a concerned citizen who strongly believes our country needs more principled leadership, more trust in government and more stability in our financial systems,” Campbell said in a statement. This is his first bid for public office.

On his website, Campbell said he aims to “make lives better” in Northern Utah. “Currently, we feel the effects of greater division and rising inflation rates expedited by Biden’s Administration and I aim to combat this once elected,” he said.

The Syracuse man is a “true conservative and vigorous supporter of first responders,” said his statement. “He supports a dominant but more strategically applied military and believes the U.S. can and should transform the world through technology,” it went on.

Also running for the seat are Tina Cannon, a former member of the Morgan County Council, and Andrew Badger, according to the FEC.

Campbell, who worked for Autoliv for 33 years, serving as chief financial officer, plans to seek a place on the ballot at the Utah Republican Party convention and he won’t take contributions. He plans to bankroll his bid with his own money.

He has dedicated “thousands of hours” of time to support nonprofit organizations and to coach sports teams. He also serves many organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, and is a mixed-martial arts fighter.
