OGDEN — A longtime Ogden resident is hoping his years of organizational experience will help him in tackling the city’s housing woes as a member of the City Council.

At the close of the filing period last week, Shaun Myers was among those aiming for the empty at-large Ogden City Council seat.

Myers told the Standard-Examiner that he’s had several community leadership opportunities over the years, including serving as president of the Weber State University Alumni Association, the Weber State Wildcat Club, president of the Ogden Rotary Club, several church leadership roles, president of the Utah State Funeral Directors Association, policy board representative and at-large executive board member to the National Funeral Directors Association, and president of the National Funeral Service Foundation.

He is also a funeral director and owner of Myers Mortuary and currently serves as the chairman of the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce’s board.

Myers said, after 40 years raising a family in Ogden, the time was right to run for public office.

“It’s a good season in my life to give,” he said. “I enjoy serving. I feel like I have a lot to offer. I can be a positive influence in the government side of Ogden City, and also representing our community.”

Myers said one thing he’d like to tackle is housing — an issue he’s already had lengthy experience with.

“For many years, I served on the Community Development Foundation,” he said. “That foundation started many years ago to purchase homes in Ogden City. We would remodel those homes and then resell them to people that lived in Ogden. I really enjoyed the fact that we bought some of the older homes that had become multi-apartment type houses/dwellings. And when we purchased those homes, we remodeled them so that they were single-family dwellings. That was part of the revitalization of downtown Ogden that helped to build a lot of what we’re seeing today.”

He’d continue that focus if elected.

“Affordable housing is a priority that I have,” he said. “Redevelopment of the neighborhoods and homes in Ogden City is of high interest to me.”

Additionally, Myers wants to strike a balance between development and maintaining green space while also making sure that Ogden is friendly to businesses.

Myers believes he would be well-suited for a position on the City Council.

“I can bring a positive influence to almost every organization,” he said. “I can bring a positive influence to our City Council. I represent all people well. I have a diverse group of friends and acquaintances I’d love to serve and represent. I think I bring wisdom and leadership and knowledge into this type of position.”

The at-large seat is currently held by Luis Lopez, who chose not to run again in 2023. Myers is joined in contesting the open seat by Katie Matheson, John Thompson, Julez Garcia, Lara Gale and Levi Andersen.
