OGDEN — Shaun Myers seems set to fill Ogden City Council’s at-large Seat C position while Dave Graf will be representing District 4.

As of Wednesday night, Myers was leading the Seat C race with 6,711 votes (59.41%) versus J. Levi Andersen’s 4,585 votes (40.59%). Graf, with 2,407 votes (52.62%), was ahead of challenger Steven Van Wagoner, who had 2,167 votes (47.38%), in the District 4 race.

Weber County Clerk/Auditor Ricky Hatch said roughly 99% of the ballots have been counted and that only a handful are anticipated to be counted after Thanksgiving.

Myers said he’ll be focused on preparation for his new role going forward.

“I’d like to become more engaged with the political process,” he said. “I come from a business background. My feeling is that I can offer a clean and new look at some of the happenings within the city and I just hope that provides some additional leadership and insight that will be valuable.”

Graf said it was somewhat appropriate that the election did come to an end when it did.

“The campaign was pushed out and we learned (about) it after we all filed and began our campaigns,” he said. “At first, I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, this is great because I’ve never run for office. This will give me more time to make sure I’ve got all my ducks in a row and run a good campaign and have a bit more time.’ Then there were periods it kind of felt long. But to end at Thanksgiving (it) dawned on me as being so appropriate. I’m so grateful for the people of Ogden that cast their ballot for me.”

Myers said he’s thankful to be able to serve the people of Ogden.

“Ogden is a pretty incredible place,” he said. “I just love our community. It has a beautiful mixture of culture and people and I love living here — I’ve lived here for the past 41 years and I just want to build on the great foundations and shoulders of those who have preceded me.”

Graf said his preparation is going to include spending time with family.

“It’s really just going to be relax, enjoy the holidays and friends and family, and look forward to the second of January when we’re all sworn in.”

Both the District 4 and at-large seats were guaranteed to see new faces after this election as Councilperson Ben Nadolski (District 4) opted to run for mayor and Councilperson Luis Lopez (at-large Seat C) chose not to seek reelection this year.

District 2’s incumbent, Councilperson Richard Hyer, was the sole filing in his district and automatically retained his position.

“I am happy for the opportunity to serve on the Ogden City Council for the next four years,” he said in a statement to the Standard-Examiner. “Having been born and raised in Ogden, UT, and having spent my entire life here, I have developed a deep love and commitment to our community and its great people. My extensive involvement in local governance, including several years on the planning commission and consecutive terms on the City Council, has provided me with a unique perspective and a solid understanding of the issues facing our city.”

The general election results come on the heels of an eventful election season.

Andersen and Myers emerged from a primary race that sported four total candidates. When the primary votes were tallied up, the at-large Seat C race was originally set between Myers and Lara Gale. However, within days of the primary, Gale withdrew from the race due to a new professional opportunity before the election results could be canvased. As a result, Andersen, who had finished in third place, suddenly found himself in the race for the general election.

Van Wagoner and Graf, meanwhile, emerged from a District 4 primary race of five total contenders.

The results of this election are unofficial and will be canvassed at a City Council meeting Dec. 5.
