Mike Slater, an Ogden Fire Department firefighter, puts a bandage on Eileen Moore after giving her a COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, at a Weber-Morgan Health Department COVID-19 vaccine clinic. It was held in the Dee Events Center at Weber State University in Ogden.

OGDEN — COVID-19 vaccination efforts will be focused next week at several schools in the Ogden and Weber school districts following the formal recommendation from federal health officials that kids aged 5-11 get vaccinated.

Pre-registration will be required, but vaccination efforts are planned for next Monday and Wednesday at three Ogden junior high schools and next Tuesday and Thursday at eight Weber School District grade schools. Nomi Health is handling the vaccinations, open to all ages, with online registration at getmyshot.utah.gov/mobile.

School officials say they’ll be getting more details to parents, who will have to give permission for their kids to be vaccinated.

“We’ve experienced a lot of up-front interest,” Weber-Morgan Health Department spokeswoman Lori Buttars said, alluding to calls her office has been receiving from parents wanting to get their kids vaccinated. “We hope that continues.”

In addition to the Nomi Health clinics at schools, the Weber-Morgan Health Department will hold its own clinics as well, open to anyone 5 or older.

Likewise, the Davis County Health Department will open the vaccinations it offers at its drive-thru clinic at the Legacy Events Center to those 5 and up starting next Monday. Registration is required at go.usa.gov/xAZFD.

Federal health officials have long been discussing whether to open up vaccinations to kids younger than 12. On Tuesday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a recommendation that those aged 5-11 get vaccinated, joining those aged 12 and up.

“The recommendation clears the way to begin vaccinating the nearly 366,000 Utah children in this age group who are now eligible,” using the two-dose Pfizer vaccine, the Utah Department of Health said in a statement. Buttars said there are around 30,000 kids aged 5-11 in Weber and Morgan counties.

In anticipation of the recommendation, the Utah Department of Health started ordering pediatric doses of the Pfizer vaccine last week, with more orders to come. “We need to keep kids out of the hospital and now we can through vaccination. I really want to encourage parents to go get their kids vaccinated, not only will it protect the child but also all the people around them,” Leisha Nolen, the state epidemiologist, said in a statement.
