ROY — A man is apparently dead after a confrontation with police in Roy that followed a three-hour standoff.

The Roy Police Department described the Friday shooting as an “officer-involved critical incident” in a press release on Saturday, but provided limited details. Gephardt Daily cited a Roy police officer, saying the man that was the focus of the incident was shot and killed.

The events Friday evening started with a report of a 39-year-old man “threatening suicide with firearms” at the Orchard Cove Apartments complex at 1801 W. 4650 South in Roy, according to Saturday’s press release. The building where the man was located was evacuated along with nearby public areas.

“The male was presenting a significant threat to the general public and officers on scene. Officers attempted negotiations for approximately 3 hours,” reads the statement. “During the negotiations the male presented a firearm in a threatening manner and shots were fired by two of the involved officers.”

The press released didn’t detail what else happened, but said “officer-involved critical incident protocol” was activated, referring additional comment to the Weber County Attorney’s Office. An office rep didn’t immediately respond to a query Saturday seeking comment.

Three deadly shootings involving police in Weber County have occurred so far this year, not including Friday’s incident in Roy. Shootouts between Ogden police and Brian Simonton on June 6 and Alex Lopez on June 13 left Simonton and Lopez dead. An April 27 shootout between North Ogden police and Jeffrey Roberts left Roberts dead.

Police engaged in a chase and shootout with Simonton at an Ogden apartment complex. Lopez fired on police in an Ogden neighborhood after a chase, precipitating the shooutout, while Roberts fired on North Ogden police after they responded to reports of gunfire at a home, according to authorities.
