Traffic backs up at the entrance to Ogden Canyon on state Route 39 due to a resurfacing project on Thursday, July 13, 2023. The stretch of road is set to receive new barriers along most of the route in 2024.

A resurfacing project began Thursday on State Route 39 in Ogden Canyon and will encompass resurfacing work from Harrison Boulevard in Ogden to the Pineview Dam, according to a press release from Mitch Shaw, senior communications manager with the Utah Department of Transportation.

“The primary resurfacing work will begin at Harrison Boulevard to the mouth of the canyon,” the release said. “This early work will require rolling lane closures. As the work shifts into the canyon the following week, one-way alternating traffic will be required. Motorists should expect to stop for flaggers and follow a pilot-car to carefully lead them past the construction zone. Traffic hold queues will run between 5-15 minutes, with the potential for brief periods of longer hold times during peak periods. The bulk of the resurfacing work should be completed by the first week of August.”

Work is expected to take around 40 days to cover the six-mile stretch of roadway and will largely occur from sunrise through 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. UDOT is discouraging unnecessary trips into the canyon during these times.

“This project will preserve the life of the roadway by adding a chip and seal coat overlay to the road surface,” the release said. “This paving process will help prevent the deterioration of the road surface, address roadway imperfections and enhance motorist safety by providing good skid resistance for vehicles.”

More information can be found on the project’s website.

Starting at $4.32/week.
