A variety of dogs attended the first Bark at the Park at Big-Dee Sports Park held by the Ogden City Animal Services in Ogden on Saturday, June 20, 2015.

OGDEN — Dog owners on the city’s east side will soon have an off-leash park for their four-legged friends.

After numerous requests from citizens asking for an off-leash option on the east side of town, the city granted approval of the dog park on the south edge of turf at Big-Dee Sports Park, 1375 Park Blvd., said Monte Stewart, Ogden City parks manager.

“The dog park is approximately 1.75 acres and has dog paddocks for small and large dogs,” Stewart said. “The need for another option on the east side arose because of its popularity.”

Stewart said while many community dog parks close during wintertime, Ogden keeps the doggy doors open at its other park year-round to accommodate pet owners. That park is located at 2542 A. Ave., adjacent to Miles Goodyear Park.

The addition will include restroom fixture upgrades, dog tunnels, ramps, hoops and water stations. There will also be seating and shade options for dog owners. The total cost for the park is a little over $341,000 and is funded through capital improvement funds and Weber County RAMP funds, Stewart said.

“City crews have begun clearing trees at the site and will continue with tree removal, grading and fence installation throughout the spring and summer with aims to have all the loose ends tied up and features installed this fall,” Stewart said.

The park will open one hour before sunrise and close one hour after sunset. Owners will be legally responsible for their dogs and any injuries caused by them. Aggressive dogs will not be permitted in the park. Dogs must also be wearing proof of current vaccinations, licenses and identification tags.

Stewart said the city is looking for springtime cleanup volunteers to help add mulch, fix features and paint. If interested, contact Stacey at staceyolsen@ogdencity.com.
