OGDEN — Saturday is Veterans Day, a chance to honor those who have served in the armed forces, and at least two activities are planned in Northern Utah.

In Ogden, American Legion Baker-Merrill Post 9 will host a ceremony on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at the Ogden City Cemetery off the north side of 20th Street west of Monroe Boulevard.

Terry Schow of South Ogden, very active in veteran’s issues, and U.S. Rep. Blake Moore are to speak, according to Sara Garcia, second vice commander for the American Legion post.

As Veterans Day looms, Schow said his big message is about encouraging veterans to tap the benefits available to them. “I’m happy to help them,” he said. “Text me and I’d be happy to reach out to a veteran or the family.”

Schow is active with many organizations, including the American Legion and the Weber County Veterans Advisory Committee, among many others. He’s reachable at 801-644-2058.

As in years past, Layton will host a veterans parade on Saturday starting at 11:11 a.m. Northern Utah Vietnam Veterans of America and the Fleet Reserve Association are the organizers, according to the Layton City website.

It will start around the 600 block of Wasatch Drive and head west through Layton Commons Park, ending at the south end of the park. After the parade at around 12:30 p.m., a veterans honors ceremony will be held at the Vietnam Memorial Wall Replica site.

On Friday in conjunction with Veterans Day, a ceremony will be held to turn over the keys to a new, discounted townhome in West Point to U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Scott Kodra and his family. He’s getting it for $375,000, down from the market value of around $520,000, thanks to the Have a Heart Home Foundation and Nilson Homes.

Kodra, who serves at Hill Air Force Base, and his wife are parents of two girls with “significant health challenges,” according to a press release on the planned ceremony.

The Have a Heart Home Foundation is a community service project initially launched by the Northern Wasatch Association of Realtors. The Northern Wasatch Home Builders Association later joined in the effort, which has led to sale of 25 new or refurbished homes at discounted prices to families “with special needs” in Weber and Davis counties.

Builders and subcontractors take part in the effort with discounted or donated supplies and labor.
