Steam locomotive Big Boy No. 4014 meets head to head with Living Legend No. 844 during the ceremonial reenactment of the wedding of the rails on Thursday, May 9, 2019, just south of Union Station at the Ogden Heritage Festival to celebrate the 150 year anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad.

OGDEN — A legendary locomotive’s return to Ogden is imminent.

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 is set to be displayed at Union Station Saturday and Sunday as part of its ongoing “Westward Bound” tour.

The Big Boy will be on display Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both days will be free for the public.

Hope Eggett, curator of the Museums at Union Station, told the Standard-Examiner that free admission also extends to the museums on these days and there will be activities available to highlight Union Station’s centennial year.

“A lot of the people that are going to be coming to visit the Big Boy aren’t necessarily local Ogdenites, but they are people who are very interested in the railroading community,” she said. “So we decided to harness that energy and tell the story about how railroading changed our city, and that starts at Union Station with its 100-year anniversary this year.”

She said there also will be activities available on-site for children.

Eggett said it’s only natural that the Big Boy will be returning to Union Station as part of the current tour.

“They were created specifically to go between Cheyenne and Ogden,” she said. “The strength of the engine was needed to get over those high mountain passes.”

The No. 4014 — which last stopped in Ogden in 2019 — has gone on a handful of large-scale tours of the Union Pacific system since it was restored. However, Big Boys used to be a more frequent visitor to the Ogden area. According to the Union Pacific’s website, the 25 locomotives of the class — first delivered in 1941 — primarily operated in between Ogden and Cheyenne, Wyoming. No. 4014 was retired in 1961 and spent several years on display at the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California, before being selected for restoration in 2013.

No. 4014 also will conduct a second tour of the system later this year, with stops in Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.

Starting at $4.32/week.
