Ogden City Council member Shaun Myers is resigning, effective July 31, according to a Facebook post Wednesday from the Ogden City Council.

According to the post, the council received the letter of resignation Wednesday. It says the resignation is the result of Myers accepting a new role within his church.

The City Council has 30 days upon receipt of the letter of resignation to appoint a replacement, according to Utah State Code, the post read.

The post stated that the anticipated application period is to be open from Monday, July 6, through 5 p.m. July 15.

“More information regarding the application requirements and the selection process will be distributed when details are finalized,” the post read.

Ogden City Council Communications Director Brandon Garside told the Standard-Examiner on Wednesday that it’s been 20 years since a resignation occurred on the City Council.

He confirmed that Myers, who is the CEO of Myers Mortuary and is in his first term on the council, is leaving to be in the presidency of the Ogden temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Garside said because Myers’ seat is an At-Large seat, anyone in Ogden who has lived in the city for the last year and is a registered voter can apply to fill the vacancy.

Myers occupies At-Large Seat C on the council.

Garside said a council meeting will be held where the appointment of Myers’ replacement will be made and that council leadership would meet Thursday to determine the date of that council meeting.

Garside said all applicants will be heard from no matter how many there are.

“They’ll get an allotted amount of time to address the council in a public meeting and then the council will try to make their decision after that,” he said.

Because the appointment will be made before Myers’ resignation officially takes effect, Garside said Myers will have a vote in the appointment.

Myers started his term following the 2023 election in which he captured 59.30% of the vote (6,855 votes overall), according to weberelections.gov.
