Jennie EarlJennie Earl is a candidate for the Utah State Board of Education District 1 seat. Below are her responses to a six-question survey sent to her by the Standard-Examiner. The Standard-Examiner made an attempt to contact each candidate involved in a competitive race in Weber and Davis counties.
1. Why is the position you are running for important?
Educating the rising generation is one of the most important responsibilities we have as a state, shaping both the opportunities available to our students and the future strength of our communities. The state board of education sets standards, oversees funding and works with policymakers to improve educational outcomes for our families in Utah.
2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills, and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?
I am in the schools, meeting with parents, talking with policymakers and finding solutions for the families in Northern Utah. I have been working to build a culture of academic excellence.
3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.
My priorities have remained consistent: advancing effective education policy, supporting educators, protecting data and responsible technology use, and advocating for parents’ interests.
4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.
Addressing complex issues in education requires listening to others, consistently engaging with policymakers, and working hard to understand the issues. I worked with lawmakers and community groups to balance competing interests while protecting instructional materials used in school prevention programs.
5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative?
I make it a priority to help every constituent who reaches out. When someone has a concern, I connect them with the state or local contact best able to answer their questions or provide information. I also help constituents understand Utah code and local policies so they have the knowledge to address issues successfully.
6. What is the best way for readers to contact you and/or get more information about your platform?
