LAYTON — Northern Utah’s annual Veterans Day Parade will be back for a 13th year.

The parade is set for Saturday, Nov. 10 with the procession beginning at 11:11 a.m. — a time signaling the exact moment the World War I Armistice was signed 100 years ago, on Nov. 11.

The armistice officially ended combat in the war and Armistice Day became an annual holiday in the United States. The holiday was eventually renamed Veterans Day to honor those who participated in all of America’s wars.

Dennis Howland, president of the Northern Utah chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America and head organizer of the parade, said staging will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Talbot Drive and Elm Street. The route will head west on Gentile Street, then north up Wasatch Drive before ending at the Layton Commons Park, 437 N. Wasatch Drive.

When the parade is finished, the park will host the Layton City Veterans Day program — held yearly to honor all men and women from Davis County who lost their lives serving in United States-involved military conflicts. The event is typically held at Davis Central Junior High, but will be held this year at the replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Commons Park.

Howland has been involved in organizing the parade since it began in 2006. He said the event has grown each year. 

“It gives everyone throughout Utah the opportunity to say thank you to our veterans and to show their appreciation for the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make to protect our freedoms and to show an understanding that freedom comes with a price,” Howland said.

After 11 years in Ogden, the parade was moved to Layton in 2017. 

Sponsored by the VVA and the Northern Utah Fleet Reserve Association, Howland said this year’s parade entries are still being finalized. In years past, the event has featured a 57,000-pound Utah National Guard Paladin howitzer tank. Other vintage military vehicles, as well as high school Junior ROTC units, high school bands, members of the Utah Military Academy, equipment and personnel from Hill Air Force Base are also typically seen at the celebration.
