An airman assigned to the 151st Air Refueling Wing, Tech. Sgt. Burton Patrick Juengel, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022, after an unexpected medical emergency.

DRAPER — A Utah Air National Guard airman from Roy died this week while deployed to Guam after some sort of medical emergency, the Draper-based Utah National Guard said in a statement on Thursday.

Tech. Sgt. Burton Patrick Juengel was on a routine deployment to the U.S. territory in the Western Pacific when he experienced “an unexpected medical emergency” on Nov. 25. He was taken to a Guam hospital for treatment, but while getting care his condition worsened and he died on Tuesday.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of an outstanding airman and express our heartfelt condolences to his wife, children and family,” said Brig. Gen. Daniel Boyack, commander of the Utah Air National Guard. Juengel was assigned to the 151st Air Refueling Wing.

Lt. Col. Philip Schembri, unit commander for the deployment, called Juengel “an outstanding airman” and said he performed his work “with enthusiasm and a positivity that motivated those around him.”

Juengel lived in Roy and is survived by his wife, also a member of the Utah Air National Guard, the couple’s daughter and their unborn child. His wife and parents were able to visit him in the hospital prior to his death, the statement said.
