Letter: Ogden has enough apartments

Aug 13, 2024

A recent letter to the editor stated, “Dozens of new apartment buildings have sprung up along Washington Blvd., Wall Ave., and 12th Street.” And in finality stated, “Let’s overcome our fear of change, celebrate all the new apartments in Ogden, and …”. Granted, Ogden needs apartments like all cities, but I think we’re good for a while.

My perspective is: I like the idea that folks want to live in Ogden, become part of our community, but also by having a chance to do so by owning in Ogden. Rather than building any more apartments, our city should encourage condos and townhouses, in appropriate locations. These types of ownership properties have a history of being more affordable than single family homes. Places that offer amenities like swimming pools, playgrounds and BBQ pits so neighbors get to know each other, where owners get a chance to build up equity in their property. According to some government estimates, as much as 45% of an average family’s net worth in this country is in home equity. Ownership also instills a responsibility to protect their investment, creates pride in their neighborhood and provides one with a sense of community. Basically, people become more grounded and stable and have a vested interest in seeing the city does well.

These same people become taxpayers, customers to local shops and restaurants and have a better opportunity to survive and raise a family in a healthier environment than what we are currently seeing erected in our city.

Contact your city council and mayor. Let them know that our community is better served by townhomes and condos than by apartment buildings. They can do this with changes to our city’s zoning laws and ordinances.

This isn’t about fear; this is about keeping Ogden’s lifestyle, Ogden.
