Letter: Renewable energy program needs to prove it will benefit Ogden
The Ogden City Council will soon vote on Utah Renewable Communities energy program and If it will not clean the air in Ogden, why are we considering doing it? Ogden residents are being asked to pay more for electricity under the Utah Renewable Communities Program with the promise of cleaner Air and a better environment.
But according to reporting by KUER, “Logan Mitchell, a climate scientist and energy analyst with Utah Clean Energy, said the program is unlikely to make much of a difference in Utah’s air quality. That’s because there aren’t many power plants along the Wasatch Front.”
So Ogden residents pay and get nothing in return, an increased electricity bill of uncertain and ever increasing amounts, forever, zero real world impact in Ogden.
If the program will not meaningfully improve the air we breathe here, then what exactly are Ogden residents being asked to pay for? We all want Clean Air and Water, it is common sense that any efforts or money spent should deliver Clear Air this program soon to be voted on by the City Council does not do that.
For many working families, every dollar on a utility bill matters cleaner air matters. More importantly, every dollar should come with a clear, measurable benefit but they openly state you will not get cleaner air.
Once again even proponents admit the primary benefit, cleaner local air, does not materialize.
Ogden residents deserve transparency, not talking points. If this program is about “global carbon accounting” which is a bizarre abstract concept, rather than local air quality, then say so plainly. The cost will rise and no one knows how much. If the benefits are indirect or long term and do not improve life in Ogden then state those obvious facts, do not sell it as something it is not.
