SALT LAKE CITY — The Standard-Examiner received 16 awards and four honorable mentions at the 2018 Utah Journalism Awards and reporter Mark Shenefelt received the Don Baker Investigative Reporting Award.

The awards, presented at a dinner Thursday night in Salt Lake City, are sponsored by the Utah Headliners chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Shenefelt’s award was for his series of stories on jail conditions in Weber, Davis and Box Elder counties.

“Mark found that people who had not had their day in court were dying from suicide, even while on suicide watch or from lack of medical attention,” the award’s organizers said. “His work publicized the fact that jail standards throughout the state were proprietary information, prompting legislation requiring Utah jails to report on inmate deaths annually.”

The Standard-Examiner’s first-place awards went to photographer Benjamin Zack for being the “best multimedia journalist” in the state, Mark Saal for his column “’Cabbagegate’ vexing Layton residents after field of cabbage was left to rot” in the humor/lifestyle column category and former editor Greg Halling for his editorial “A piece of federal legislation nobody in Ogden wants.”

• Sports non-deadline reporting – Honorable Mention: “Weber’s Kestin Cable cultivates warrior mentality after deaths of her parents” by Ryan Comer and Matt Herp
• Spot news – 3rd Place: “Wildfire rips through Uintah neighborhoods, 100 families evacuated” by Mark Saal, Jacob Scholl, Jessica Kokesh and Standard-Examiner staff
