Officers work the scene of a reported domestic disturbance in Hooper on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022. A Weber County Sheriff's Office deputy responding to the incident shot and killed an armed man at the home who had fired a gun, according to Lt. Courtney Ryan.

HOOPER — A Weber County Sheriff’s Office deputy fired on a suspect involved an apparent domestic disturbance in Hooper on Tuesday, killing the man.

Lt. Cortney Ryan, the sheriff’s office spokesperson, said officials were called to the scene of the disturbance around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in a residential neighborhood of Hooper around 3675 South and 5250 West. While officers were en route, the situation “progressively worsened,” Ryan said, and the man involved brandished a gun and fired it.

When sheriff’s officials arrived soon thereafter, the man was outside, holding the gun.

“One of our deputies fired a round and shot the male,” Ryan said. The man, who officials haven’t yet named, died on the scene. The other person involved in the domestic situation wasn’t injured, nor were any bystanders or deputies, he said.

Karen Waite, whose front door faces the backyard of home involved, said she did not know the family who moved into the new development less than a year ago. “We’ve waved hello to each other on occasion,” she said.

Law enforcement vehicles surround a home in Hooper where an armed man was shot by a Weber County Sheriff's Office deputy responding to a reported domestic disturbance on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022.

Waite was leaving her home for an appointment as law enforcement arrived to the scene. Waite said an officer pulled up to the corner of 3675 South and 5250 West and exited the vehicle with a gun drawn, approaching the residence from the back. “I didn’t hear anything,” she said of the moments leading up to officers arriving on scene.

Ryan didn’t say if additional shots were fired by the man or other deputies, noting that determining such details would be the focus of an investigation into the incident.

As is standard procedure, the Weber County Attorney’s Office Critical Incident Team will investigate the matter. The deputy involved will be placed on administrative leave, also standard procedure.

Five people were shot by law enforcement officials in Weber and Davis counties during 2021, compared to nine the previous year, according to Standard-Examiner records. Four of the five shootings were fatal, though none of the incidents involved Weber County Sheriff’s Office officials.

The latest shooting incident involving law enforcement in Weber County occurred Nov. 1 when Casey Pacheco, 32, was shot, but not killed, by an Ogden officer after threatening a woman and then the officer with a knife. Pacheco later pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer.
