LAYTON — A 15-year-old boy was stabbed Tuesday afternoon during a melee between two groups of students in a park across from Layton High School, and three schools were put on lockout until a suspect was arrested.

The suspect, 16, allegedly used a blade to stab the victim in the upper abdomen, said Lt. Travis Lyman, Layton Police Department spokesperson. The teenager was arrested at home shortly after, Lyman said.

He said two groups of students with escalating grievances crossed the street during the lunch hour and squared off in Layton Commons Park, other students watching and taking video. “Several students were fighting, and with two in particular it escalated to the point that one of the boys went to a backpack and retrieved what was described as a knife or a pair of shears,” he said.

The victim was taken by ambulance to an Ogden hospital. “We don’t believe the injuries are life-threatening,” Lyman said.

The suspect will be referred to 2nd District Juvenile Court.

Lyman said the high school and nearby Central Davis Junior High School and Crestview Elementary were put on lockout until the suspect was found.
