OGDEN — A Weber County Jail inmate died over the weekend and the Weber County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

“We suspect suicide,” Lt Joshua Marigoni said Monday.

Investigations are standard protocol when an inmate dies, to determine the circumstances. Officials haven’t yet released any additional information pending notification of family and the outcome of an investigation into the matter.

It’s the first death of an inmate in the Weber County Jail this year and the third since 2021, according to Marigoni. “I would say we’ve taken a lot of steps in the recent past to mitigate any jail deaths. There are still things out of our control,” he said.

A deputy found the inmate unresponsive in a jail cell Saturday and jail officials attempted lifesaving measures.

“The medical team and (emergency medical services) personnel responded to assist. Lifesaving measures were ultimately unsuccessful and the individual was pronounced deceased,” the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “We offer condolences to the family of the deceased. We also thank our deputies, support staff, medical team and EMS responders for their assistance in this tragic event.”

Joey Conrad died of an apparent suicide in the Weber County Jail on Feb. 28, 2022, the only death in the facility in 2022. Jail officials reported the death of an inmate with “extensive pre-existing medical conditions” in the facility in 2021, the only death that year.

The jail reported four deaths in the Weber County Jail in 2020 — two apparent suicides, another another involving an inmate under medical supervision and a fourth whose death was investigated as suspicious, according to previous Standard-Examiner reporting.

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office last week reported that an inmate in the Davis County Jail in Farmington died of suicide after hanging himself in his cell.
