OGDEN — A homeless man faces a charge of attempted murder stemming from an alleged fight and stabbing last week near the Lantern House homeless shelter in Ogden.

Michael Acevedo, 31, faces a count of attempted murder and a count of illegal possession of a weapon by a restricted person, a prohibition imposed due to a prior incident, according to charging papers.

Acevedo allegedly stabbed another man several times while they were arguing last Thursday in the 200 block of 33rd Street near Lantern House, seriously injuring him. According to charging papers, Acevedo stabbed the other man at least eight times in the face, neck and upper chest, injuring him. Charges were formally filed last Friday in 2nd District Court.

Acevedo said he stabbed the other man because he had said he had a gun, though police found no firearm at the scene of the incident. “Michael stated the conflict was about the victim allegedly following Michael around the shelter and causing problems for the past month,” read charging papers.

The victim, 58, was hospitalized after the incident. “He is reportedly in stable condition,” Ogden police said in a statement.

Acevedo is being held without bail in the Weber County Jail. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 23 in the case.
