FARMINGTON — A 17-year-old girl angrily objected in court on Tuesday to the sentence of one year in jail given to a woman who stabbed her and two other teenagers in Bountiful last summer.

The teenager said she almost died from the stabbing on July 30, 2022, at the Bountiful B parking lot. She focused her anger on Mia Ruth Hansen, 20, of Bountiful, who agreed in a December plea bargain to admit to two counts of second-degree felony aggravated assault and a third-degree felony obstructing justice count.

In return for the guilty pleas, the Davis County Attorney’s Office agreed that twin prison sentences of one to 15 years would be suspended and a 365-day county jail term would be imposed instead.

Hansen was sentenced by 2nd District Judge David J. Williams on Jan. 10. But a follow-up hearing was called for Tuesday after one of the stabbing victims said she had not been given a chance to speak at the sentencing.

Williams said Tuesday he was surprised because he thought that under the terms of the plea bargain, all the victims had agreed to the sentence.

In the video hearing Tuesday, the victim told Hansen, “You are so lucky you got this plea deal. Fifteen years, that’s what I wanted.”

She said Hansen held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her. “You knew exactly what you were doing,” the girl said. “All I remember is fighting for my life before bleeding out myself.”

The girl and a second teenager were critically injured in the stabbings. Two others suffered less severe wounds, according to charging documents.

The teen said she was on the ground when she realized she had been stabbed. “My hand was cut open and I could see the bone,” she said. “I started to feel cold and wetness and that’s when my lung started to collapse. I could not breathe. I seriously thought I was dead on the way to the hospital.”

She said she lost 50% of her blood and could not shower herself for a month. She still can’t lift anything weighing more than 10 pounds.

“One year for stabbing multiple children?” she said. “I’m in disbelief.”

She said she and Hansen had been close friends, but now she views her as a “disgusting monster. You deserve to rot in jail, for real.”

After the jail time, Hansen will be on probation for three years.

Charging documents said Hansen claimed self-defense, saying she was attacked with a baseball bat and got a knife to defend herself. Two young women initially corroborated Hansen’s version of events but later recanted, saying Hansen had asked them to support the bat attack story. They later told police that they had gone to the parking lot with Hansen, who had a knife in her sleeve and said she planned to stab the victims. There was no bat attack, they said.

Police said they later found knives, a bloody towel, marijuana and drug paraphernalia in Hansen’s vehicle.
