The 124th Utah State Amateur men’s golf tournament moves on to its match-play format Wednesday after two rounds of stroke-play qualifying that concluded late Tuesday night.

The tournament is being held at Soldier Hollow in Midway this year. Current BYU golfer Zac Jones fired a 12-under-par over two rounds to lead the stroke-play qualifying field. Jones shot consecutive 66s.

Stroke-play qualifying pares the field down to 64 golfers who are placed into a match-play bracket. Thirteen golfers are tied for 63rd place at 3-over and will contest a playoff at Soldier Hollow on Wednesday morning due to a 70-minute weather delay during the round Tuesday.

Former Syracuse High and BYU golfer Cole Ogden shot 9-under-par, including an eagle on Tuesday, to lead the ranks of Northern Utah golfers. Current Utah Valley golfer Landon Anderson, a Davis High alumnus, shot 7-under-par in the two rounds to qualify for match play.

More golfers with area ties who qualified for stroke play at 2-over or better include current Weber State golfers Brody Childs and Hayden Banz, former Weber State golfer Hunter Howe (currently at the University of Utah), plus Bryson Hirabayashi (Clearfield High, Westminster), Braxton Watts (Farmington High, Utah), David Jennings (Oakridge Country Club), Dylan Chugg (Fremont High, Utah Tech), Cameron Tucker (Bonneville High, Utah State), Spencer Wallace (Layton High, Utah Tech) and Boston Watts (Weber State, Utah).

Incoming Weber State transfer Brendan Thomas qualified for match play as well.

Howe finished his Monday first round with four straight birdies. Wallace birdied his final two holes on Tuesday to get to 1-over in stroke play and avoid the playoff.

The Men’s State Amateur tournament continues with the Round of 64 on Wednesday (after the field is set) and concludes with a 36-hole final match on Saturday starting at 7:30 a.m.

Martin Leon, a University of Utah golfer, is the defending Men’s State Amateur champion and qualified for match play by shooting a cumulative 1-under.

For the second straight year, the Utah Women’s State Amateur Championship will be held in Northern Utah. The Ogden Golf and Country Club is hosting that tournament which runs Aug. 1-4.

The course last hosted the Women’s State Amateur in 2014. The tournament’s defending champion is BYU golfer Apelila Galea’i.
