BYU’s Delaney Gibb wins unanimous Big 12 freshman award

An “all-time season” from BYU guard Delaney Gibb has led to hardware as the Big 12 Conference awarded Gibb as its women’s basketball freshman of the year in league awards announced Tuesday.

Gibb was selected unanimously for the award after claiming the title of No. 1 freshman scorer in program history for the Cougars.

“Delaney has had an all-time season,” BYU head coach Amber Whiting said in a news release. “From the very first game, she has shown why she is one of the best freshmen in the country and a massive addition to our BYU women’s basketball family. … Delaney is the ultimate competitor and she always finds a way to get the most out of herself. She has big dreams and with her work ethic, she has the opportunity to achieve them.”

Gibb, a 5-foot-10 guard, averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.6 steals over 29 games this season, with shooting splits of 46% overall, 40.1% from the 3-point line and 77.2% at the free-throw line.

She has 10 games scoring 20 or more points, capped by her 36-point outburst Saturday in the regular-season finale at Utah. Her single-game season highs also include 11 rebounds and seven assists, and she has made five 3-pointers in three different games.

Gibb — a native of Raymond, Alberta, but who played her final high school season at Timpview — is also first in BYU’s history among freshmen in assists and in 3-pointers per game (2.58). She was a 10-time freshman of the week in the Big 12 this season.

As the No. 12 seed, BYU faces No. 13 UCF in the first round of the tournament at 10 a.m. Wednesday, streaming on ESPN+. A victory would have BYU playing again at 10 a.m. Thursday against No. 5 Kansas State.
