Fremont and Roy claim first-round girls soccer playoff wins
PLAIN CITY — Brooklyn Robinson’s hat trick helped No. 15 Fremont High past No. 18 West for a 7-0 win in a 6A first-round girls soccer state playoff game.
Avery Vaughn scored twice in the first half for the Silverwolves (9-8).
Olivia Van Orden and Grace Kirby scored in a three-minute span early in the second half. Camrey Martin assisted two goals, Vaughn assisted one goal and Ashlyn Gwynn assisted once.
Fremont plays at No. 2 Riverton on Tuesday, Oct. 12 in the second round.
ROY 5, GRANGER 0
ROY — Lylian Rosenberg kept a clean sheet and No. 9 Roy scored three second-half goals in a 6A first round shutout over 24-seed Granger (3-11).
Macy Reed and Kasia Greely each netted twice for Roy (12-4). Essence Burrus scored one goal. The Royals will face No. 8 Syracuse in the second round on Tuesday, Oct 12.
FARMINGTON 6, TAYLORSVILLE 0
FARMINGTON — Sammy Kearns scored a brace as No. 13 Farmington blanked 20-seed Taylorsville (7-10) in the 6A first round.
Whit Avei, Madi Davis, Brynlee Austin and Liv Hoover each netted once for Farmington (8-8). Anndi Wright and Brooke Taylor each assisted two scores while Bailey Burrup and Cara Christopherson had one assist apiece.
Emmy McKeon and Issy Hoskins shared the clean sheet for the Phoenix, who will face No. 4 Pleasant Grove on Tuesday, Oct 12, in the second round.

SYRACUSE — Syracuse swept Weber on Wednesday by scores of 25-17, 25-8, 25-19 to stay undefeated overall and in Region 1.
Andie Thomas led Syracuse (15-0, 8-0 Region 1) with 12 kills. Hailee Garcia had 30 assists with one block. Kambree Rodriguez tallied 16 digs. Brilyn Jensen and Mikelle Neilson earache served two aces.
Weber (9-14, 2-7) did not report stats.
DAVIS 3, LAYTON 2
KAYSVILLE — Davis needed all five sets to beat Layton: 25-14, 25-20. 28-30, 23-25, 15-10.
Aubrey Neilson led Davis (12-12, 4-4 Region 1) with 26 kills. Hannah Cutright had 27 digs while Katie Anderton tallied 25 assists and 11 digs.
Emma Brough had 12 kills, five aces and 10 digs for Layton (6-18, 0-9) Logan Lindsay added 12 kills and two blocks. Mercedes Lopez dished out 37 assists.

CLEARFIELD — Farmington grabbed a region win at Clearfield 25-18, 16-25, 25-21, 26-24.
Farmington (6-11, 4-5 Region 1) did not report stats.
Shaylee Stanger had 17 kills for Clearfield (12-6, 6-3). Sadie Christiansen tallied 19 digs and Delaney Rasband handled 42 assists.

Olivia McDougal paced Northridge (18-6, 6-1 Region 5) with 9 kills. Sami Jo Diaz tallied 21 digs.
Peighton Summers led Bonneville (9-16, 0-7) with one ace, two kills, eight digs and 16 assists. Hannah Mickelsen added two aces, three kills and 17 digs. Macy Graybeal added 22 digs, Kelsie Heslop 10 kills, and Natalie Wilson three blocks.

LAYTON — Layton Christian beat Ogden 17-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 16-14.
Mariana Said paced Layton Christian (11-5, 5-3 Region 13) with 21 kills and 51 digs. Taís Gontijo has seven blocks and Sage Mousley added blocks and two aces. Lily McGuckin tallied 42 assists and 45 digs.
Rees Bockwoldt led Ogden (10-10, 5-3) with 26 kills, 14 digs and two aces. Soledad VanOrden tallied 21 kills, one ace and 15 digs. Olivia Blackford added 23 digs and served three aces.

OGDEN — St. Joseph swept Utah Military (0-10, 0-9 Region 17): 25-15, 25-8, 25-5.
Sarah Snell led St. Joseph (18-3, 8-1) with seven kills, seven aces and seven assists. Montse Hernandez added seven kills, five aces and three digs. Lexy Bombela tallied 12 assists.

MORGAN HIGH SWEEPS TITLES
Morgan High senior Tanner Telford won medalist honors by eight shots at the 3A boys golf state tournament held this week at Oquirrh Hills in Tooele as the Trojans won the team championship for the fourth consecutive year.
Telford shot even-par 72 in Thursday’s second round, one day after carding a searing 8-under 64 to take the first-round lead. In Wednesday’s first round, Telford carded seven birdies and an eagle.
The Trojans had a team score of 26-over 602, which was nine shots ahead of second-place Grantsville.
Caige Toone shot 8-over to tie for eighth place individually for Morgan, which saw Lance Loughton finish tied for 11th at 10-over and Jonathan Compton finish tied for 22nd at 16-over.
Ogden’s Coltin Powell finished tied for third individually at 2-over as he shot even-par 72 on Thursday. Layton Christian’s Hugo Padilla took fifth at 3-over.
Ben Lomond’s Trenton Harris was the Scots’ high finisher, checking in with a 24th-place finish after rounds of 82 and 79.
4A STATE TOURNAMENT
At the 4A state tournament at Smithfield’s Birch Creek Golf Club, Bear River senior Ryker Bennett finished tied for 23rd place with an overall score of 14-over-par 158. Bennett shot 5-over 77 in Thursday’s final round.
Ridgeline beat Crimson Cliffs in a playoff for the team title, and RHS junior Zach Skinner shot 5-under and won medalist honors.
