State wrestling: Ogden’s Rogers wins state title; Layton boys leading after 6A Day 1

Ogden High junior girls wrestler Tomi Rogers won a state championship Thursday night at the 3A/2A/1A combined state tournament in Richfield.
Rogers, in the 235-pound weight class, pinned Union’s Oakley Snow in the finals match. Brighton Summers, in the 110-pound weight class, finished third for the Tigers.
Morgan’s Tenley Jones won the state title at 100 pounds with a first-period pin. Lorie Wardell took third at 125 for the Trojans.
On the boys side, Morgan finished second as a team with 213.5 points, far behind Juab’s tally of 307.5.
Morgan had three state champions: Drew Korth (113 pounds), Will Korth (126) and Rylee Creasey (215).
Ogden’s Braxten Shobe finished third at 175 pounds, Morgan’s Cole Keele finished third at 285 and Ben Lomond’s Laurenz Davis was fourth at 285. Ben Lomond’s Noah Mann took fifth at 190 pounds.
LAYTON BOYS HAVE NARROW LEAD
Layton High’s boys wrestling team has a narrow lead after the first day of the 6A wrestling state tournament Friday held at Utah Valley University. The Lancers lead four-time defending champion Pleasant Grove 103-101 and have six wrestlers in the semifinals.
Twenty-one Northern Utah wrestlers overall advanced to the semis, which will be held Saturday.
The wrestlers advancing to semifinals are: Cole Fenwick (Layton, 106 pounds), Zack Anderson (Syracuse, 106), Jason Worthley (Fremont, 113), Geronimo Rivera, Jr. (Layton, 113), Hudson Palmer (Farmington, 113), Jace Lemons (Layton, 120), Jacob Waddoups (Davis, 120), Sutton Brown (Syracuse, 126), Tucker Keller (Fremont, 132), Logan Hancey (Fremont, 138), Corbin Platt (Fremont, 150), Jordan Faifai (Syracuse, 157), Sam May (Farmington, 157), Tanner Giatras (Weber, 165), Zach Phipps (Syracuse, 165), Kael Bennie (Layton, 165), Geovanni Thomas (Davis, 175), Ethan Hearne (Layton, 190), Ridge Lindley (Fremont, 190), Davis Pickett (Clearfield, 285) and Noah Linford (Layton, 285).
There were some big upsets on the first day by wrestlers who will be in the semifinals.
Layton’s Cole Fenwick, who qualified fifth at the Division B tournament, knocked off the Division A winner in the second round of the 106-pound bracket.
Syracuse’s Zack Anderson, who was seventh in Division B, beat the Nos. 2 and 3 wrestlers from the Division A tournament, also at 106 pounds.
Fremont’s Tucker Keller, at 132 pounds, qualified fifth from Division B and took out the Division A winner in the second round to get to the semis.
In the 175-pound bracket, Davis’ Geovanni Thomas (fifth at Division A) beat the Division B winner in their second-round match.
In the 6A girls tournament, 13 Northern Utah wrestlers qualified for the semis: Kristina Kent (Davis, 100), Ulyssa Peterson (Weber, 100), Lexus Bertagnolli (Roy, 110), Marlie Rigby (Layton, 110), Alenna Navarrete (Weber, 110), Samantha Memmott (Layton, 115), Olivia Barton (Syracuse, 120), Valentina Martinez (Davis, 125), Brylee Roennebeck (Syracuse, 125), Brinlee Gines (Fremont, 130), Haley Diaz (Layton, 155), Ellyana Shaner (Weber, 155) and Adel Roennebeck (Syracuse, 170).
