SALT LAKE CITY — The scoreboard will show that Bountiful High girls basketball was undone in its 5A state semifinal against Springville by a two-plus quarter stretch (from late in the first quarter all the way through the third quarter) in which it scored just six points.

Said scoring drought played an ultimately decisive role in the Redhawks’ 41-21 loss to the defending state champion Red Devils on Wednesday at the Huntsman Center.

“Pressure of the moment and Springville combined, these kids have never been here, they haven’t experienced this,” Bountiful coach Joel Burton said. “To play two games here at the U, I’m extremely proud of them for what they’ve accomplished.”

Springville, despite Bountiful’s height advantage, outrebounded the Redhawks 27-19. The Red Devils, a young and guard-oriented team, pressed Bountiful into a 7-of-34 shooting night from the field, by far its worst shooting game of the season.

BHS freshman forward Taylor Harvey made a shot inside to cut the Springville lead to 8-7 with 1:34 left in the first quarter. Who knew the game would turn as it did immediately after that basket.

Over the next 9 minutes and 34 seconds, the Redhawks were outscored 13-2, going on a scoring drought of nearly six minutes across the first and second quarters at one point.

They shot 4 of 17 in the first half and of Bountiful’s 13 missed shots, Springville rebounded 10 of them. Practically every time Harvey touched the ball inside, Springville sprung a double team and Harvey finished 3 of 12 from the field with six points and three blocks.

“We had some shots that I thought were pretty good shots that we normally make, they just wouldn’t drop today. I give Springville a lot of credit, I mean, everything was contested, but at the same time we’ve been making those shots all year,” Burton said.

The turnover and rebound woes continued in the second half for the Redhawks, contributing also to their offensive struggles and spelling the end of their season.

Lizzy McConkie ended up leading the Redhawks with nine points, shooting 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.

McConkie gave BHS an early 2-0 lead with a tough banked shot from the left side. Thirty-nine seconds later, the Red Devils tied the game 2-2, took the lead at the 6:00 mark of the first quarter and led the remaining 30 minutes of the game.

Bountiful finished with a 21-4 overall record and played in its first state semifinal since 2016, the year it won the state championship.
