Ogden High’s baseball team finished the season by winning nine of its final 10 games, punctuated by beating regular-season region champion Grantsville in the Region 13 tournament championship game last week.

The Tigers’ reward for their torrid run of form came Thursday in the form of the No. 11 seed in the upcoming 3A baseball state playoffs.

Ogden will travel to Spanish Fork where No. 3 American Leadership Academy is hosting an opening-round “pod.” There, Ogden will take on No. 6 Delta at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Delta beat Ogden 8-1 in the Tigers’ second game of the season on March 12.

The winner takes on ALA at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The loser plays at 5 p.m. against the loser of ALA’s first-round game, which will be against either Manti or Providence Hall.

Ogden, a team filled with sophomores and juniors, has experienced a turnaround season in 2022, going from 0-18 last year to 13-12 so far this year. The Tigers started the year 2-7, then ended up finishing second in Region 13 with an 8-5 record behind Grantsville, who’s the defending 3A state champion.

Junior catcher Sean Garceau leads Ogden in batting average at .557 to go with 19 RBIs, 11 doubles, three triples and two home runs.

Elsewhere in the 3A bracket, Ben Lomond and Morgan will travel to play-in games on Friday afternoon where the winner moves on to a pod site on Saturday and the loser goes home.

The Scots (5-17) are the No. 20 seed and head to No. 13 Judge Memorial at 3 p.m. Friday. The winner will play at No. 4 Carbon at 10 a.m. Saturday. Ben Lomond is led by Manuel Fraijo, who’s batting .288 with 13 RBIs this year.

Morgan (12-13) is the No. 17 seed and heads to No. 16 North Sanpete at 3 p.m. Friday. The winner takes on No. 1 Juab at 10 a.m. Saturday in Nephi. Trojans pitcher Gage Adams has struck out 97 batters in 55 2/3 innings pitched with a 2.64 ERA this year.

Region 13 member Layton Christian isn’t participating in the state tournament.

After the opening pod rounds of the 3A baseball tournament Saturday, the tournament continues Thursday, May 12, at Utah Valley University.

The 3A softball state tournament bracket will be released Thursday morning. Full tournament brackets can be found online at uhsaa.org/tournaments.

BOYS TENNIS BRACKETS, FORMAT REVEALED

Boys tennis has a new playoff format this year. The state tournaments are seeded by a player or doubles team’s RPI ranking.

Jones receives a bye to the round of 16 along with Syracuse’s Mason Brophy, who’s seeded No. 6 in the No. 1 singles bracket after a 12-4 regular season.
