Prep roundup: Morgan repeats as 3A girls tennis state champions; 6A tennis play-in results

By Patrick Carr - Prep Sports Reporter | Oct 3, 2022

Morgan High School’s girls tennis team repeated as 3A tennis state champions on Saturday, picking up 53 team points to narrowly defeat Rowland Hall, which had 47 points. Saturday’s title was also the Trojans’ third triumph in four seasons.

Morgan swept the doubles championships and had two singles players, Katelyn Steel and Savannah Dutson, advance to championship matches of No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Sydney Jensen and Ryann Jensen won the state title at No. 1 doubles by defeating Grantsville’s Addy Butler and Madison Bolinder 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. The Jensen duo was the top-seeded team in the No. 1 doubles bracket and didn’t drop a set in either of their four state tournament matches.

At No. 2 doubles, Lucy Tripp and Brylee Adams prevailed in the title match against Rowland Hall’s Kate Altman and Frances Hodson 6-2, 6-1.

Tripp and Adams, the top-seeded team in No. 2 doubles, breezed through all four matches and won all their sets by scores of 6-2 or better.

The UHSAA debuted a new scoring system to calculate team state champions this year.

Winning a championship match was worth 5 points, so Tripp and Adams’ win over the Rowland Hall team effectively clinched the title for the Trojans as it gave them 5 points and prevented the Winged Lions from getting 5 more points.

After winning a play-in match to advance to the main draw of the tournament, Ogden High’s Baylee Anderson and Katelyn Starley won their first-round match at No. 2 doubles, only to run into Tripp and Adams in the second round and lose 6-0, 6-2.

Sydney D’Hulst, who was the No. 20 seed in No. 1 singles, upset No. 13 Emma Chandler (South Summit) in the play-in round to advance to the main draw. D’Hulst fell to Manti’s Heidi Jorgensen 6-1, 6-1. The Tigers picked up 6 points as a team.

Ben Lomond’s Makaela Wilcox and Presley Hester, the No. 13 seed in No. 1 doubles, won their play-in match to get to the main draw, where the two lost in the first round 6-2, 6-0 against Rowland Hall’s Elena Owens and Margaret Estabrooks.
