We’re not quite in the teeth of the prep football season, but some competitive matchups are on the schedule this week in Regions 1 and 5. A quick rundown of this week’s games and predictions is below.

Last week’s prediction record: 10-3

Season prediction record: 54-18

BOUNTIFUL at BONNEVILLE, Game of the Week

This could be the de-facto Region 5 title game again.

Bonneville (5-0, 1-0 Region 5) runs into a good Bountiful defense, but the Redhawks’ (3-2, 1-0) offense hasn’t eclipsed 20 points yet this year.

Statistically, the Lakers have the best defense in the region (12.2 points per game allowed) while Bountiful is No. 2 at 13.2 per game. The first one to 20 points might win.

Bountiful’s Faletau Satuala has five interceptions already and Bonneville’s Sime Havili has 10 tackles for loss and four sacks.

Prediction: Bonneville

UNION at OGDEN

This will be the closest 3A North region game of the week and an Ogden win (1-3) is possible, based on looking at comparative results between it and Union (2-3).

The injury bug bit the Tigers last week, but this is an intriguing game for Ogden’s offense to get up and running against a defense that gives up 26.4 points per game.

Prediction: Ogden

GRANTSVILLE at BEN LOMOND

Ben Lomond (3-2) starts 3A North with a gauntlet: Grantsville (5-0) this week, then Morgan next week, like facing Georgia and Alabama back to back.

This could be a long night for the Scots, but they do have a potent pass rush with 17.5 sacks that could help things. Their 3-2 record through five games is their best since 2016 (4-1).

Prediction: Grantsville

CLEARFIELD at WEBER

Friday’s game is the best chance either team has at winning a game for the rest of the year.

Weber (0-5, 0-2 Region 1), which is getting hit hard with injuries and other absences, has played the tougher schedule and, despite what the lopsided losses show, has been in most games for the first half.

If there’s an opening for Clearfield (0-5, 0-2) to take advantage of, it’s the third quarter: Weber’s been outscored 53-13 in the third.

Prediction: Weber

ROY at KEARNS

Roy (3-2, 0-1 Region 2) faces a Kearns (1-4, 1-0) team having a down year.

After West rushed for 403 yards on the Royals last week, Roy will want to contain the Kearns ground game.

Seven players have 10 or more rushes and four players have 10-plus catches for Roy.

Prediction: Roy

FREMONT at LEHI

Fremont (2-3) has won two straight by a combined score of 54-6. Senior kicker Dax Iverson is 6 for 6 on extra points and 4 of 5 on field goals in those games.

Lehi (5-0) is not just a different animal; the Pioneers have a legitimate argument as one of the top three teams in the state.

Prediction: Lehi

DAVIS at SYRACUSE

Both teams have won three in a row. Syracuse’s (3-2, 1-0 Region 1) consecutive wins are by an average of 27.3 points, while Davis’ (3-2, 1-0) three-straight wins are by an average of 9.7 points.

Davis’ offense is 24 for 57 on third-down conversions and the defense has held its opponents to a 14-for-43 third-down rate.

Syracuse’s defense and special teams have driven the Titans’ success. The key for their defense is to keep the Darts’ receivers contained and make their tackles.

Prediction: Syracuse

LAYTON at FARMINGTON

Farmington (5-0, 2-0 Region 1) has its toughest region test so far against a Layton team (3-2, 0-2) that can match the Phoenix size-wise.

Farmington quarterback Easton Wight has 14 touchdowns in the last three games; eight have gone to tight end Mitch Nielsen.

Layton will need to conjure a good offensive game as well as some of the early-season form that had people picking the Lancers as a Region 1 dark horse.

Alexander Barnes has 26 tackles, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble in the last two games for Layton.

Prediction: Farmington

WOODS CROSS at NORTHRIDGE

Woods Cross (2-3, 0-1 Region 5) is the type of big, physical running team that Northridge (2-3, 0-1) has struggled with.

It helps that the Knights just saw an option/wing team last week, that being Box Elder, but the Bees gashed Northridge.

Plus, the Wildcats’ defense has improved and seems up to the task of slowing the Knights down.

Prediction: Woods Cross

VIEWMONT at BOX ELDER

Teams line up against Box Elder (4-1, 1-0 Region 5) and take note of the option/wing offense.

The Bees’ defense allows just 2.56 yards per carry and just under 200 passing yards per game with seven interceptions.

It puts them in a great position to deal with Viewmont (3-2, 0-1) quarterback Luke Jacobs, who was bottled up last week against Bonneville. The Vikings need to get their playmakers in space.

Prediction: Box Elder

BEAR RIVER at LOGAN

Bear River (1-4, 0-1 Region 11) was previously alright in the fourth quarter but, in the last two games, the Bears have been outscored by a combined 36-7 in the fourth quarter, watching two competitive games turn into double-digit losses.

Logan (3-2, 1-0) outscored Sky View 10-0 in the fourth quarter last week and won 20-16. The Grizzlies are faring better than preseason predictions indicated.

Prediction: Logan

MORGAN at JUAN DIEGO

Broadcast on KMYU

Morgan (5-0) and Juan Diego (2-3) have both beaten Manti. The Trojans did it 42-0, all in the first half. The Soaring Eagle did it 34-32, needing to stop a late two-point conversion.

MHS quarterback Nick Despain has 1,142 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, one interception, 65.9% pass completion and four rushing scores. On defense, eight different players have recorded a sack.

Prediction: Morgan

DUCHESNE at LAYTON CHRISTIAN, 4 p.m.

Layton Christian (3-2, 1-0 1A North) will play a game that’s been circled on its calendar for nearly a year, a rematch of last year’s feisty 1A state-title game that Duchesne (1-4, 0-0) won 18-14, and a rematch of a regular-season game Duchesne also won 39-15.

Both meetings were fraught with penalties and, in the title game, nearly an all-out brawl. Coupled with further strife between the schools this offseason, Friday’s meeting should be interesting.

LCA’s focus this year has been on discipline and reducing penalties. LCA has improved slightly in those departments and, combined with more talent and experience than Duchesne plus the fact that Duchesne has dropped off slightly from a year ago, LCA could win this one.

Prediction: Layton Christian
