LAYTON — It was homecoming for Layton High football, but it was visiting Weber who gifted the Lancers too many easy scoring opportunities on Friday.

Layton constantly started possessions on the Weber side of the 50-yard line and captured its initial victory of the Region 1 campaign, easily outdistancing the Warriors 38-19.

Senior quarterback Tyler Wensel threw two touchdown passes to Elias Parkinson — one in each half — to lead the Lancer attack.

Weber backup quarterback Tyce Abbott passed for two touchdown passes in the second half, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

Layton added to a 21-7 halftime lead with Wensel’s second TD toss to Parkinson, a 10-yarder at the 6:22 mark of the third quarter, making it 28-7. The drive started on the Weber 28-yard line after an

interception by Elijah Tanuvasa.

Ryan Wensel tacked on a 31-yard field goal to expand the margin to 31-7 before Weber finally got back on the scoreboard.

Abbott completed a 76-yard bomb to wideout Salesi Moa, closing the gap to 31-13, but Porter Cannon answered with a 4-yard run late in the fourth quarter to seemingly close out the scoring.

But, Abbott had a second touchdown up his sleeve, throwing a 21-yard touchdown to Crash Coggins as the clock ran out to put a wrap on the game.

Layton led 21-7 at the half, a traditional number reached in an unconventional way. The Lancers scored three touchdowns, missed two extra points and had a safety to reach their 21.

All of the touchdowns for both teams benefited from a short field.

The Lancers (4-3, 1-3 Region 1) took a Weber punt and began their opening drive on the Warrior side of the field at the 47. Braxton Martin capped the short drive with a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter and Layton led 6-0.

Weber (1-6, 1-3) started the ensuing possession at the 50 and Nakosi Swain scored from 6 yards out with 24 seconds left in the period to lead 7-6 after one.

A quiet second stanza changed late as Layton scored 15 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes to lead 21-7 at the break.

Weber opened the second quarter with the ball, missed a field goal and Layton’s first drive of period resulted in a punt. But the Warriors fumbled the return and Layton had a first-and-10 at the Weber 25.

Tyler Wensel connected with Parkinson in the endzone for a 14-yard scoring strike and the extra point made it 13-7 with 3:32 left in the half.

A penalty put Weber at its own 9-yard line and when the snap on fourth down sailed out of the endzone, the Lancers expanded their lead to 15-7.

The Warriors elected to kick off after the safety and Cannon returned the ball 84 yards, all the way back to the Weber 2-yard line.

On fourth-and-goal, Brigham Lawson scored on a 4-yard run as time expired and, following another failed extra point, Layton had its 21 points at the break.
