After a 16-0 regular season, the Bonneville High girls soccer team found out Saturday morning that it’s the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 5A state playoffs, which begin with first-round games this Thursday.

The Lakers won Region 5 for the third year in a row. For the second year in a row, they won the region with an unbeaten 10-0 record and will host a second-round playoff game against the Lehi/Murray winner on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

In 6A, the Roy Royals lead the northern contingent with the No. 4 seed after finishing a back-to-back unbeaten Region 2 championship. The Royals, No. 5 Farmington, No. 7 Davis and No. 8 Syracuse all got first-round byes in 6A.

Roy hosts the Weber-Riverton winner on Oct. 11 in the second round. Farmington, which dramatically won the Region 1 title last Thursday at Syracuse, will host the Bingham/Westlake winner in the second round. Davis will host either Kearns or Copper Hills.

Region 1 and Region 5 rematches appear to be on the cards for this year’s playoffs.

At No. 8, Syracuse hosts the winner of Thursday’s 6A first-round game between No. 9 Layton and No. 24 Granger.

The Titans and Lancers, who both finished one game behind Farmington for the Region 1 title, have played each other twice this year and split the series.

No matter who gets through, the northern 6A teams are mostly in the same quarter and half of the draw as No. 1 Lone Peak, the overwhelming state-title favorite. The winner of Syracuse’s second-round game most assuredly has to face the No. 1 Knights in the quarterfinals.

Should Roy and Farmington both advance to a quarterfinal, against each other, the winner of that one would likely see LP in the semis.

In 5A, No. 9 Northridge hosts No. 24 Box Elder and the winner heads to No. 8 Bountiful. Northridge won both meetings with Box Elder this year. Those three Region 5 teams are all in the same quarter of the draw as Bonneville, meaning a possibly quarterfinal matchup with the Lakers is on the table.

In a change from previous years, the 5A state tournament field shrunk from 33 schools to 24, meaning Box Elder got the final playoff spot in 5A.

Clearfield is the No. 16 seed in 6A after the Falcons’ best regular season since 2014. They’ll host Herriman in the first round. Weber visits Riverton and Fremont goes to Hunter.

First-round kickoff times are typically scheduled for 4 p.m., but some kickoff times do change. Complete tournament brackets can be found online at uhsaa.org/tournaments.
