Weber High just hired its new girls basketball head coach this week and, in the same breath, will now look for another head coach.

Trevor Howell, the school’s baseball head coach and athletic director, will take over as girls basketball head coach next school year. He’ll step down as baseball coach at the end of this season.

He informed both teams of the news earlier this week, and the head baseball coach job was posted to the district website on Tuesday morning.

This is Howell’s ninth season as Weber’s head baseball coach after five years at Bonneville and one at Clearfield. The Warriors are currently 3-8 overall and 2-6 in Region 1.

Howell said he’s previously coached basketball for a total of 13 years at Ben Lomond and Bonneville high schools, and Orion Junior High, in varying capacities.

He was mum on his plans for the Weber girls basketball team for the time being, citing a need to devote his time and energy to the current baseball season. His baseball team has 12 scheduled regular-season games remaining, plus possibly two more should Weber qualify for a playoff series.

Howell replaces Clay Jackson as girls basketball coach, who resigned after three seasons. The Warriors went 5-17 in 2022-23.

Howell is also the school’s athletic director and juggles AD responsibilities along with coaching baseball in the spring — the busiest and most unpredictable season on the prep sports calendar.

He’ll stay on as athletic director next school year and will have more time to devote to what will be 10 spring sports (with the sanctioning of boys volleyball in 2024) and their various needs with scheduling changes, athlete eligibility, coaching certifications, field preparation, referee assignments/payments and more.

Spring sports’ nonstop pace contributed to Howell deciding to resign as baseball coach after this season ends, a decision he relayed to the baseball team at the start of the season.

But he started talking to friends and colleagues, who in turn told him that balancing AD duties with coaching was easier to accomplish in the winter when less sports are scheduled, so Howell put his name in for the girls basketball job.
