Prep roundup: Roy baseball sweeps series with West

ROY — Roy High baseball’s seven-run second inning held up as the Royals swept their three-game region series against West with a 9-7 victory Friday.

Samuel Smith and Justin Miller hit 2 for 4 for Roy (8-6, 7-2 Region 2). Smith had two RBIs and Miller pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits.

Miller, Tyler Clark and Peyton Yoder all doubled.

BOX ELDER 10, WOODS CROSS 3

BRIGHAM CITY — Tommy Greer batted 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored as Box Elder downed Woods Cross (7-7, 4-2 Region 5).

Matthew Petersen batted 2 for 3 and drove in three for Box Elder (5-5-1, 2-4). Ryan Griffin went 2 for 4 with a double and KJ Argyle hit an RBI double.

GRANTSVILLE 13, BEN LOMOND 3

GRANTSVILLE — Manny Fraijo batted 2 for 2 with a double and drove in all three Ben Lomond runs as the Scots fell at Grantsville in a game that was called due to weather after three innings.

Mason Williams and Max Doss got the other two hits for Ben Lomond (1-8, 0-5 Region 13).

OGDEN 9 & 4, MORGAN 7 & 9

MORGAN — On Saturday, Ogden and Morgan split a doubleheader that saw the Tigers win the teams’ three-game series.

In the first game, a continuation of Friday’s game that was suspended in the fourth inning, Ogden (11-3, 5-1 Region 13) held off a five-run seventh inning from Morgan (2-15, 2-6) and won 9-7.

Sean Garceau pitched four scoreless innings with one hit, five walks and seven strikeouts, along with driving in four runs at the plate for Ogden. Diego DeLeon batted 4 for 4 with two RBIs and a double. Carter Rasmussen hit 2 for 2 with a walk and three runs scored.

Daxton Loertscher went 2 for 3 for Morgan, Camron Talbot went 1 for 1 with three walks and two RBIs, and Brigham Spens hit 2 for 4.

In the second game, Morgan used a pair of four-run innings to take a 9-1 lead and win 9-4.

JJ Compton gave up one unearned run on two hits in five innings pitched for Morgan, despite six issuing six walks. Brigham Spens and Ryder Waldron drove in two runs each. Tryker Jones hit 1 for 1 with three walks.

Ellio Saenz hit two doubles for Ogden and Sean Garceau went 2 for 3 with one double and one RBI.

BONNEVILLE 5, NORTHRIDGE 4

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Bonneville avoided a series sweep Saturday by scoring five runs on four hits and three walks.

Andrew DeGroot and Hudson Taylor had one RBI each for Bonneville (2-9, 1-5 Region 5). Enrique Garcia hit a double and pitched three innings, striking out eight against one hit, one run and four walks allowed.

Tytan Redd and Bentley Whitear hit 1 for 2 with one RBI and one walk for Northridge (4-8, 3-3). Ryal Moon pitched five innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

FARMINGTON 11, WEBER 4

FARMINGTON — On Saturday, Mitch Nielsen homered, doubled and drove in five runs as Farmington avoided a series sweep.

Zach Quinton hit a double with two RBIs for Farmington (6-9, 5-6 Region 1). Carson Graves threw 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief.

Ian Carver doubled and stole a base for Weber (3-10, 2-7). Eastyn Barker, Ashton Burnett and Gage Clark had one RBI each.

SYRACUSE 8, LAYTON 4

SYRACUSE — Syracuse avoided a series sweep thanks in part to a five-run first inning.

Jake Hopkins hurled a complete game and gave up three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts for Syracuse (6-10, 5-6 Region 1). Tag Hamblin drove in three runs and Hopkins drove in two.

Gunnar Wolfe hit 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Layton (8-6, 8-3). Bryson Esplin hit a home run.

DAVIS 7, CLEARFIELD 1

CLEARFIELD — On Saturday, Five pitchers took the mound as Davis completed a series sweep over Clearfield (2-12, 0-8 Region 1).

Cory Bridges threw 3 2/3 innings and allowed one run for Davis (6-8, 6-2 Region 1). JC Warnick hit 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Tyson Elkins and Wally Grant each drove in two.

BOX ELDER 19, VIEWMONT 3

BRIGHAM CITY — Brooke Richards hit two doubles and drove in seven runs in a four-inning win.

Malena Benson and Ashley Hammers both batted 2 for 3 for Box Elder (10-4, 4-1 Region 5). Hammers drove in four runs and Benson had two RBIs.

The Bees had eight hits and drew 10 walks plus an additional six batters were hit by pitches.

SYRACUSE 20, ROY 5

SYRACUSE — Syracuse put up 10 runs in the second inning and run-ruled Roy in a non-region game.

Jazmine Prathan hit two home runs with four RBIs for Syracuse (9-3). Kenlie Cowdin batted 3 for 3 and Jaidyn Franco went 2 for 4 with a homer.

Addie Gibby hit a two-run double for Roy (3-12). Aspen Johnson, Izzy Cline and Lily Garcia each had a base hit.

FARMINGTON 1, SYRACUSE 0

SYRACUSE — Cole Janke scored with five minutes left and Davis Wadsworth earned the shutout in goal as Farmington (6-3, 5-3 Region 1) broke a three-game losing streak by winning at Syracuse (6-4, 4-3).

ROY 4, CYPRUS 0

ROY — Aidan Hart netted twice as Roy shut out Cyprus.

Xander Allred kept the clean sheet for Roy (7-2, 7-1 Region 2). Hunter Patterson had a goal and an assist and Francisco Gandarilla scored once. David Rangel and Beau Belnap each assisted one score.

UTAH MILITARY 5, WENDOVER 4

RIVERDALE — Pedro Flores and Juan Montero scored two goals each as Utah Military overcame a 3-2 halftime deficit for its first win of the season.

Trevor Alexander scored one goal for UMA (1-8, 1-6 2A North). Flores, Christopher Trejo and Tanner Youngreen assisted one goal each.
