Prep football roundup: Ogden posts consecutive shutouts for 1st time since 1962; Davis wins wild one

OGDEN — Vinnie Apodaca threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Kire Thompson after just 69 seconds of game time and Ogden High football (2-0) started fast in a resounding, 42-0 win over Judge Memorial on Friday night.

It’s the first time Ogden has posted consecutive shutouts since 1962, a season in which the Tigers blanked three straight opponents and posted six shutouts overall.

Will Minkevitch added a 7-yard TD run and a 24-yard screen pass TD to Max Trujillo. Lucas Heiner grabbed an interception, then ran for a 3-yard score on the ensuing drive to put the Tigers up 28-0 at halftime.

Minkevitch found Lincoln Barnes for a 9-yard TD pass in the third quarter, and Thompson caught an 11-yard score in the fourth for the final scoring margin.

DAVIS 35, WEST JORDAN 34

KAYSVILLE — West Jordan scored on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 31 seconds left in the game, went for two and the win, and threw an incomplete pass as Davis held on for its first win of the season.

Tradon Bessinger threw touchdown passes to Bode Sparrow (22 yards) and Tyson Baggett (30 yards) in the first quarter. A 25-yard Finn Garff field goal and a Nick Johnson 28-yard interception return for a touchdown had Davis (1-1) up 24-0 at the end of the opening frame.

Jackson Roybal threw two touchdown passes to his own team to rally West Jordan all the way to a 28-27 lead. After a Garff field goal of 27 yards, Roybal threw a 14-yard score to Kyle Curtis for the lead with 7:23 left in the game.

Bessinger tossed a 6-yard score to Logan Sundloff to regain the lead with 1:06 remaining, capping a 13-play drive, and Bessinger converted an important two-point play on a throw to Owen Talbot to go up 35-28.

Roybal and West Jordan answered barely 30 seconds later but the two-point pass was left empty.

Davis rushed for 183 yards, led by 72 yards on 14 carries by Brighton Pierce. Carter Dorius led the Darts with 13 tackles and Kash Gates picked off Roybal twice.

BOX ELDER 21, MOUNTAIN CREST 20

HYRUM — Dax Sumko scored on an 18-yard run with 19 seconds left in the game to tie it, then Ethan Barber’s PAT gave Box Elder a come-from-behind win at Mountain Crest.

Ryan Griffin threw two touchdown passes for Box Elder (2-0). Griffin found Kason Anderson for an 11-yard score with 2:23 left in the first quarter. Griffin then hit Damon Rodriguez, who sprinted 67 yards to paydirt and gave the Bees a 14-0 lead with 6:31 left in the half.

Mountain Crest scored three straight touchdowns to take a 20-14 lead with 3:09 left in the third quarter.

MORGAN 59, BEAR RIVER 24

MORGAN — Beck Sheffield passed for two touchdowns and ran for one more to lead Morgan to a big win over Bear River.

Sheffield scored on a 4-yard run for Morgan (1-1) and completed touchdown passes of 65 yards to Tate Nielsen and 62 yards to Lincoln Gilson. Gilson also returned a punt 62 yards for a score.

Jett Salmon scored on runs of 6 and 1 yards in the first half. Zak Sargent scored on a 10-yard run, Beau Johnson kicked a 23-yard field goal and went 8 for 8 on PAT attempts, and Jack Despain connected with Bracken Saunders for a 7-yard touchdown pass to cap the scoring for Morgan.

Tydon Jones scored on a 1-yard run to get Bear River (1-1) on the board and tie the game 7-7 with 1:06 left in the first quarter. Stone Higley kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Owen Olsen found Jace Roberts for touchdown passes of 80 and 11 yards in the second half.

BOUNTIFUL 37, FARMINGTON 27

FARMINGTON — Bountiful built an early 20-0 lead, Farmington nearly came back in the fourth quarter and the Redhawks scored 10 late points to pull away for a non-region win.

Brigham Morrison ran for two touchdowns and caught one TD for Bountiful (1-1). Emerson Geilman threw two TDs: one to Morrison and one to Britton Tidwell. Faletau Satuala ran for one score and Landon Zayas kicked a late field goal.

Jake Metcalfe scored three TDs for Farmington (0-2), catching two from Easton Wight and returning an interception 79 yards for a score. Hayes Smith scored on a pick-six to put Farmington on the board just before halftime.

PLEASANT GROVE 40, WEBER 14

PLEASANT GROVE — Nakosi Swain scored on a 37-yard run and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Salesi Moa as Weber (0-2) lost at Pleasant Grove.

SPRINGVILLE 36, BONNEVILLE 8

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Hunter Davis caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from Jaxon Johnson in the third quarter to get Bonneville (0-2) within 15-8 against Springville, but the Red Devils responded with 21 unanswered points to take control.

Springville running back Tevita Valeti had five touchdown runs with a long of 62 yards.

HUNTER 36, CLEARFIELD 6

WEST VALLEY CITY — Trace Hansen booted a 29-yard field goal at the 5:13 in the second quarter to give Clearfield a 3-0 lead, but the Falcons couldn’t stop Hunter in the second half.

Hansen hit another field goal with 7:58 left in the third quarter to bring Clearfield (0-2) to a 14-6 deficit.

GRANGER 54, VIEWMONT 7

BOUNTIFUL — Daren Tovey threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Cache Tuia for Viewmont’s (1-1) only score in a blowout loss to Granger.

Granger quarterback and BYU commit Carson Su’esu’e threw 17 of 26 for 245 yards and four touchdowns and ran nine times for 109 yards and two more scores.
